12 pro. Verizon. Good signal area. Had my phone on airplane mode yesterday morning. Turned it off of airplane mode at 9:15 am and could not make calls. “Call failed” message showed up immediately when attempting to dial. Strangely, though, cellular data worked perfectly. I could get texts (iMessages anyway).
Tried turning airplane mode off and on. Tried turning the phone off and on. Tried resetting network settings. Tried turning WiFi on and off and WiFi calling on and off. Tried switching to 4g only. Nothing worked. Still could not call. The 5G (or LTE) icon was in the top of the screen but the signal bars were grayed out (but again, I could check email and used safari extensively with cellular data). I did not get a message that I had no service, and I could still use data.
Issue continued all morning as I travelled around town by car into several areas. Could not make calls but could use data. At 2 pm back home I pulled of my MagSafe Apple leather case to attempt to remove SIM card and re-install it . As I was removing the case (it was halfway off) I noticed that in the top right corner 3 of 5 signal bars were suddenly illuminated. (They had all been grayed out all morning.) I attempted to make a call and it worked. Phone has worked fine ever since (with the case back on).
anyone experienced anything like this or know what may have happened? I have only had my phone for a week or so (still within return period). Should I be concerned and consider returning it? Any thoughts? I checked the connectivity thread and those issues seem to be signal drop issues where there is no data or calls. This issue seems different because I could get data but could not make calls.
