I noticed that my iPhone reports that I’m on 5G UC after installing iOS 26.3. What does that mean? It used to display just 5G.

Your carrier is probably just telling you now when you are on 5G vs 5G mmwave (UC, 5G+, etc.). What is displayed has always been dependent on carrier profiles and what they want displayed. Mint recently, (26.1 I think) introduced 5G UC being displayed. Service is still the same.

I switched to Tello, and now it shows just 5G without the UC, despite Tello using the same towers as Mint Mobile.
It all depends on the band. Some carriers, like Verizon, show 5G UW, which stands for ultra-wideband 5G. Carriers that support 5G UC, which stands for ultra-capacity, will also show up as 5G UC, including T-Mobile. AT&T and a few other carriers use 5G+. Additionally, 5G E can appear on some non-5G compatible iPhones, which isn’t quite the full-fledged 5G experience but rather a step up from 4G LTE before the widespread launch of 5G.

Aren't there multiple 5G bands that aren't MMWave? I get UC (or maybe it's UW) at my house, and I live in the middle of the woods like 10 miles from the closest tower.

Edit: Just looked it up. UC on t-mobile towers can mean mmWave, or 2.5ghz mid-band.
