Please just admit that YouTube videos were a bad example, given how highly optimized Safari is.

The GPU is the only disappointment to be found. Everything else is either exactly the same or better, and the screen is much, much better.

If I were a gamer and the GPU really mattered I would have built a gaming PC ;)

I don't think I need to "admit" anything. I'm also quite tired of people saying, "if I were a gamer... blah blah blah." Unless you think I'm wrong to expect better gaming GPU performance on a 2-year newer iMac with a paid-for upgraded GPU configuration, please just stop.

Apple must consider to rethink the display...80% of people has some sort of bleed , and in 1 year in the bottom right and left corners stains appear...you can see them with all white background

Just playing a video shouldn't cause 105C temps or require you to run Safari. The HTML5 benchmark I previously posted: http://ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/performance/Fireflies/default.html

Is not a game and is not a super-high GPU stress program like FurMark. Yet it causes pretty high temps and fan noise in the retina iMac -- not the previous 2013 iMac with GTX-780m.

This may not be a "gamer only" issue. They were just the first to notice it. As more apps are written to more fully use OpenCL, this problem could spread.

It's sufficiently serious that some site like barefeats.com or macperformanceguide.com should do specific focused testing on this one area.

Thanks Angeldust. I was wondering to return my imac 5k or not due to faint rattling/ticking sounds from a fan. With any noise in the house i could not hear the sound, but when i was working at night i was most certainly there. Due to your post i did return it, and the new iMac (i7,295xt,512ssd) does not have the fan noises. I can still hear the fans if i lisen really carefully but it is very faint and the sound is more like a gentle breeze instead of the annoying rattling/ticking.
My new iMac was assembled in ireland instead of thailand

Apple was very polite and returned my iMac without any hesitation. I live in Norway and we do not have apple stores but ups delivered my new iMac yesterday and TNT are going to pick the old one up in 4 days.

I have the upgraded 5k retina (m295x and i7 cpu) with no fan noise at idle, only when running some processor heavy apps but they usually have sound and it's always louder than the fans themselves. I always have to turn off the speakers to hear the fan. Also no fan rattle, that's definitely a defect.

WOW! you guys in Europe get better service that we do out here in Canada. My defective unit when apple agreed to exchange under RMA, I had to ship mine out to them, and 5 days after they receive it, they would start the order to built the next unit. I have been mac-less for week now.

It actually worked out to be faster to split the charger between two credit cards and use the 22day grace period to buy another unit while the first (defective) unit was getting returned. There was ZERO option to have them cross ship so I would keep the (defective) unti until the new one showed up.

In my case I guess it worked out to my favour sort of in a twisted way in while waiting for the new unit to ship, Apple put up some better units on the Referb so i bought one of those saving me a few hundred dollars but shipping will take 3 extra days.

I had the rattle fan noise the first 2 weeks of my late 2012 iMac. If it hadnt disappeared I would have replaced it. Its not suppose to be like that. My new 5K imac has no such sound and before it starts spinning at 2000rpm when playing a game or such, its pretty much silent for my ears. No rattle sound. Also wifi is connected instantly when waking up from sleep. So, don't accept anything less.

My 5K iMac fan just started to rattle after doing the hardware test. There's a test where it spins up the fan and after that I can hear the rattling noise. Very disturbing.
Had it for over a month without this issue.

Give the system a little tap toward the bottom at the rear. I've noticed this issue a few times on my 5K iMac, and the same thing on 2012 iMac. Sometimes the fan can get a little... off.

Yeah I tried tapping but it didn't help. But then I changed the fan speed a few times with smcFanControl now and the noise has stopped.

Odd issue to have on such a new machine. That's the kind of thing that usually happens after a few years.

Yep adjusting the fan speed up and down also can fix it. I agree it's a little lame, but I got used to it on the 2012 so I was ready for a similar experience on the 2014.

Is this the sound you've had? (very audible towards the end of video)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I46XreLiIX8&spfreload=10

After about 2 weeks of use I started having this sound. It's very audible in a quiet room. If I raise the level of speed then it's ok without any rattle. This only happens on idle.

I think I'll try some adjustments with SMC fan control and wait a few weeks. If it won't go away I'll go to support.

Rattling fan doesnt sound normal.
Definitely not normal. I can hear the fan on mine but it's no louder than my 2012 15" rMBP. And it definitely doesn't rattle. The last iMac I had, however, made a rattling noise and I had it exchanged back then.

Did it resolved? Here's noise from my 5k, mic placed behind iMac right by the stand.

All sprite, now i understand lags and stuff. Do this on safari:

http://ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/performance/Fireflies/default.html

Try to do something else meanwhile and everything lags real bad...

Then do fireflies, let's say with firefox and smooth as butter. So, safari sucks. Not M290X or anything else.

You are dead right.... I tried fireflies with Aviator (chromium-based browser) and the animation was vastly great in FPS (40-odd vs 11 on Safari).

Seems like Apple has some work to do with their Safari HTML5 code :/

Edit: tried same animation on Chrome Canary and got 60 fps!
