I have a 5S which won't start no matter what I try.

More info:

- for several months, part of the screen, a band about half an inch wide, and about 2/3rd of the way up, won't respond to touch.
- For several months, the phone screen has been going blue then rebooting at random intervals (perhaps 2xday.
- Last month it would start loosing the GPS and 4G signals if I started using navigation while on 4G. It would go into a continuous cycle of restarting the radios and dropping them again. If I started navigation while on home wifi, it worked fine for the rest of the journey.

- Last month I dropped it and cracked the screen. I had it replaced at a phone shop. I was hoping this would improve the touch issue, and it did but it came back after a while. The random rebooting continued but it didn't really affect my usage. The navigation issue was fixed though which was a relief.

- Recently it would go dead then not restart. I would have to wait a while then try to restart it. This started getting harder and harder, I would have to wait for the battery to go completely dead and then plug it in again to restart. (Sometimes it got hot while blacked out, indicating a stuck process, so I guessed it was still on even though the screen was blank).

Now it's completely dead. I've tried holding down the power and home button, I've tried plugging it into a 2amp iPad charger, nada, still ded.

Any ideas? If I can start it one last time then I can do a full backup and give it the last rites.

I would suggest trying to install a new firmware on your iPhone. You can download the firmware here: http://www.iphonehacks.com/download-iphone-ios-firmware

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll give it a go if or when I can get the phone to start up. Any ideas for starting it up? Happy to open it up and fiddle around with the battery etc, but I don't know which bits would be best to fiddle with.

Ok, I've plugged it into iTunes. Still dead. iTunes doesn't detect any phone activated. Tested cable, works fine with another iphone.

I treated myself to a nifty USB voltage tester (pic below from Amazon):

I tested it with a healthy iPhone, and it shows about 0.8amp, about 5w while charging. With the 5S, it's only showing 0.2amp, 1.2w, so it seems the battery is dead or there's some other problem with the charging system.

Now what?
