Actually, apple took a calculated risk not releasing a 3G radio die to battery concerns. Same with LTE. Also, at the time of iPhone 3G launch, 3G was in limited markets, even more limited than LTE at iPhone 5 launch. Certainly that played a role as well.

As for the iPad, I might agree, or I might say they couldn't have achieved the price point and performance they wanted going retina last year. We are already seeing performance issues with the third gen (First gen retina) iPad and some buyers are kicking themselves for not having waited. I don't know the answers here, just musing. :)

i dont remember much about the day when the iphone 2G was announced, but i certainly remember when the 4S was announced and despite the limited LTE coverage back in the day people were still expecting it on that device - top tier android phones were already shipping with it.

i remember it as it was yesterday, it was the "WTF?" moment of the iphone 4S.

perhaps it was yet another "calculated" risk by apple. perhaps it was battery concerns. but when you see a pattern of this behaviour time and again you get suspicious.

Again, the issue here was battery life due to radio technology. Top tier android phones were dead within 4 hours due to this. AND there wasn't a toggle to turn it off. I remember. I had one.

The chip in the 5 simply didn't exist when those android
Phones were on LTE.

We can scream conspiracy until we are blue in the face. I say that where apple has historically held back is software. No ten by turn, no Siri, on. iPhone 4. Why? I'm shocked the 4s and the 5 had the same software feature set last year.
