ALL apple mobile devices feature a redesign for the second release and then once every two years. Everything.

2007 iPhone - new
2008 iPhone 3G - REDESIGN
2009 iPhone 3GS
2010 iPhone 4 - REDESIGN
2011 iPhone 4S
2012 iPhone 5 - REDESIGN
> Cycle: Redesign on even years

2007 iPod touch - new
2008 iPod touch 2G - REDESIGN
2009 iPod touch 3G
2010 iPod touch 4G - REDESIGN
2011 iPod touch release skipped
2012 iPod touch 5G - REDESIGN
> Cycle: Redesign on even years

2010 iPad - new
2011 iPad 2 - REDESIGN
2012 new iPad
2012 newer iPad
2013 iPad 3 - REDESIGN DUE
> Cycle: Redesign on odd years
The two year mark for the iPad redesign will be March 2013.
Don't buy the iPad with the Retina Display - a new one is coming less than half a year away.

I think the date change was intentional and permanent to get everything in before the holiday season.

We're not going to see anything new until September when Apple updates the iPhone again.

Yes we will. Apple don't put all their eggs in one basket (that is the holiday season).

In all honesty, I think this strategic move to release an updated ipad 3 is to shift release dates to the fall before the holidays and to also make the devices transition to the lightning cable. i love the rapid charge of the lightning connector so i welcome the new addition. I don't think a redesigned ipad is in the cards until the fall of 2013.

I think the days of a spring launch are over.

It simply doesn't make sense. The buying season is now...it's not in the spring where the only money people have is tax return money.

That's assuming they get a return in the first place.
