Bollocks to that, go from my XR to the 12 and lose perceived real-estate? Think I’ll just nope out of that one.

12 Pro Max sounds interesting though if cost wasn’t a factor, genuinely larger real-estate to match the larger screen size

Here's what it looks like on device: (iPhone 11 - iPhone 12)
Unfortunately this means we also lose the landscape split screen view in some apps. (Settings).

I don’t want to go “smaller” than my 11 so this is kind of sucky. Part of the reason I wish they kept the exterior size of the 11 and used the reduction in bezel to increase the display to 6.3 inches without increasing the exterior size. Oh well; looks like my next iPhone will be a pro max.

So more content on the 11 pro?

Let's see if I have this right (that it's basically a wash)

11 Pro: 1125 x 2436 resolution / 3x scale = 375 x 812 points
12 both: 1170 x 2532 resolution / 3x scale = 390 x 844 points

390 / 375 = 104% The 12s display 4% more content than the 11 Pro and the 12s' text would be 96% as large (1/1.04)... except

6.1 / 5.8 = 105% The 12s have a 5% larger display than the 11 Pro which slightly more than offsets the point reduction in text size.

thanks, no point swapping a 11 pro for a 12 then

No. The 12/Pro will still show more content than the 11 Pro - same scaling but bigger screen means more real estate. But the 12/Pro next to the 11/XR (of the same size) will show less content because the scaling on the 12's is zoomed in slightly more.

That’s a huge difference and a huge letdown. Now that the PPI of the 12 has been fixed, I was willing to compromise a little more size (compared to my 11 Pro) for Max-type scaling. Seeing this, that argument is moot.

Do you have a similar comparison for 12 Mini vs X/XS/11 Pro?
