Why should you have to do the leg work for Amazon? I would email them back and tell them you're not going to take your laptop to Apple because it's a hassle getting there. Ask for a refund or replacement and stick to your guns. They just want you to do a work so they can justify returning the item to Apple after you return it to them. The problem is that so many people return laptops that have little or nothing wrong with them that they are stuck trying to sell them as refurbished. In your case, you have a legitimate defect (a dead pixel in the middle of the screen is bad) so get it replaced. Call for an RMA and insist on returning it.

So applecare will only replace if you have more than 6 dead pixels?

What about if the machine is DOA, has a Bad superdrive, slanted keys or loose battery cover and DIDNT buy from apple. Will applecare replace a macbook for these problems? or do you still have to go through the original seller? this just makes me more scared to order from ebay or something.

thanks!

The dead pixel issue is not the same as the other issues you listed - DOA and bad superdrive. Those are universally accepted as problems and you will have no problem getting applecare (as long as the problems did not arise from accidental damage or anything they can pin on you).

Slanted keys, loose battery cover, and dead pixels are really up to the genius or CSR to decide whether that's a valid concern.

Dead pixels are strongly subjective, as Apple does not guarantee a dead/stuck pixel free machine. In fact, a few dead pixels (under 3 or 5 within a certain orientation/space) are actually within spec.

If you get a jerk of a CSR/Genius - he can technically refuse to repair/replace your system. It's been a tossup - some have had an exchange without issue, some have had some trouble.

The loose battery cover/slanted keys... I'm not too sure about, but I'd assume it would depend on the severity of the issue.

Here's an excerpt for what used to Apple's dead pixel policy for the last generation of powerbook G4 15" -- I'm not sure if it's still valid, but I think it probably is:
