Recently I managed to buy an iPhone 8 Plus Space grey 256GB for a steal. Unfortunately after using it for only a couple minutes, my hand starts to cramp up. It's simply too big and will thus be shipped back to the store I bought it at. In the meantime I sold my iPhone 6s, so I can't go back to that one. Now I have two iPhone 8's coming, both luckily bought at discounted prices as well. They are:

iPhone 8 Space grey 64GB
iPhone 8 Silver 256GB

The difference in price between them is €100,-. I've only owned a space grey iPhone 5s and iPhone 6s before, because I believed the integration of the screen with the black underneath the glass on the front looked more sleek (and I still do). However, I do like the white and silver look of the back.

I have a couple of questions for the community here to help me make a decision between the two phones:

1) Does the increase in storage warrant a €100,- increase in price?
2) Does the space grey aluminium scratch more easily than the "regular" silver aluminium?
3) Do people get used to the black bars on the outer rim of the screen on a silver/white iPhone?

For me at the moment it's a toss up. I think if the amount of storage was swapped, I'd still like the look of the silver, but would go with the safest choice and get the space grey one. However, if €100,- more for a quadruple increase in storage is a steal, I would be willing to pull the trigger on the silver one. That is if there's also the added advantage of the silver one being more scratch-resistant. In terms of personally required storage, I believe 64GB would be enough for me. From a resale perspective getting the 256GB might be more worthwhile though.

Any thoughts are appreciated!

(FYI: in my country, the 64GB model is sold by Apple for roughly €810,- and the 256GB model for €980,-)

1) yes but only if u need it. I use 40GB on mine;)

2) no

3) yes otherwise they wouldn't sell millions. But it's a personal taste.

I would keep the space grey

I don't know what people who have 256GB phones are loading them up with. Do they really need all that stuff on their phone? I don't even have 256GB of stuff on my laptop or desktop.

I was very into black last year — I had the jet black 7+. But I'm over it now. I prefer the white, i.e. silver. I actually got the gold 8 and was a bit disappointed with the colour to be honest, but couldn't be bothered to change phone yet again, so I live with it.

1. I’ll spend the €100 to get the extra storage if at all you feel like you might be using it.

2. The cramp is not something you continue to notice. I came from a 6 to an 8 Plus this year. I was feeling the same and have always resisted myself from getting the plus model but this year I took the plunge and I’ve gotten used to it in the last 2 months. I’d highly recommend you to try it out a bit more.

While I don't have the entire 256GB filled, I do have ~60GB on my iPhone (photos, music and apps) so the 64GB model wouldn't have been enough. The extra space I'd occasionally use for movies an TV.

Yes, I can use Optimize Photos to save space but I'd prefer the iPhone to have a complete replicate of photos/videos, apart from the copies I have on iCloud, laptop, desktop, NAS and external HDD.

And before you ask why not go the streaming route for music and videos, an extra $100 or so every 2 years for storage upgrade is a lot less expensive than upgrading to Unlimited data plans for me (to the tune of $80/mo or $960/yr plus taxes).

Although I understand what you mean, I feel like optimise storage is definitely the option to go for me. iCloud storage for me is more than just photos. I keep work related stuff on iCloud as well to keep everything available across all my devices and the seamless integration works for me.

64gb has been plenty for my needs as I keep most everything on the cloud. I guess if you’d like to keep everything on your device then 256gb is necessary. It’s a shame that Apple didn’t offer 128gb because I feel that’s the sweet spot in storage

They know that 64gb is enough for a lot of people, but a lot of them will go 256 to be safe, and never wind up using even close to that much.

The % of people who have over 115gb on their phones has got to be under 20%. 128gb is the sweet spot for nearly everyone. Apple is smart/greedy.

I use iCloud Photo Library (I'm on the 200GB plan) but I don't trust it as the only repository of full quality photos and videos.

Lots of music, pictures and video. 64GB is just not enough. Personally, I can live with 128GB, but since Apple is offering either a) not enough, or b) too much, I went with too much.

Myself would buy cheaper. I use 2gb of memory on music. I have 12gb of 32 free. I have owned 16gb phones til the 32gb became the norm due to bigger OS. Just not a hoarder on apps/music/pictures or whatever else. Primarily a phone to me that I can check text music and banking and safari/order stuff. My friend has one and he has like 200gb of music on his. crazy

I stream pandora, have had pandora plus for like 10 years now.

Thank you all for the feedback. I think I have decided to get the space grey. At first I was heavily leaning towards the silver of which I just love the back. Obviously, the back is not what I'm looking at most of the time. Additionally, I checked how much space I had left on the 64GB space grey model and it was nearly 33GB. So I choose to get the cheaper space grey one. I still have the silver one for the time being, just in case I might change my mind.

You made the right decision. Buy the space you need, don't use the space you buy. What I mean is, dont try and fill space because you have it. could take years to fill your device, when time comes, buy the bigger storage.
