I think I will stick to my i5 330m, I was thinking of upgrading to the new low end 15" but the GPU seems to be worse than what I already have!

All the notebook check links beat me to it, but yes the 6490m is a bit if a dead duck.

It looks like they want to offer a 15" inch at lower cost for those who don't care about graphics. Which is great because the 6750m is awesome and a really smart choice. 6830m would have been faster but is based on old technology with no display port 1.2 support.

I will definitely buy the top-end 15-inch model.
Not knowing the upgrade price here in Sweden (since apple store here is still down) I'm thinking of upgrading the screen. Will the 6750 card handle gaming (medium-high settings) in 1680-1050?
Gaming is not the main reason for me to buy it but still... It would be nice.

any advantages for non gamers.

in gfx cards discussions people saying 'buy the better one' tend to assume that everyone games.

The higher one should run SC2 and most games well at their resolution, but on an external monitor or anything near 1920x1080 and it'll slow down a far amount. It's less powerful than the current iMac high end card, thats for sure.

The 6490 is the only reason I haven't pulled the trigger yet. Ughhh I don't know what to do... Gaming isn't a priority but every few months I relapse into WoW and I really don't want to dip below 30 FPS in an almost six year old game on a brand new, almost $2000 (with hi-res upgrade) machine.

I think its important to have the best GPU as it will make it more future proof irrespective if you play games or not. Operating systems are starting to increasingly harness the GPU!

iMac uses laptop GPU's too?

I just started a thread with info on these two vid cards before seeing this one. The 6490 is disappointing to say the least.

Unfortunately none of those links provide benchmarks for either GPU. I guess until someone actually benchmarks the new MBPs we're all in the dark.

It is speculation for now and partly based off of what we know on the HD 5000 Series. It would be safe to see how the Mobility 5770 performs.

Its ridiculous! The 15" base GPU is slower than the old 330M and hardly faster than the integrated HD 3000. And that in a 1800 $/EUR whatever laptop.

The price is more of a problem than the GPU, since people who dont play games or need a decent GPU will be happy with the low end GPU, but for that price its hard to swallow.

Thats the kind of stuff that drove me away from Apple in 2009, but i never found a Windows Laptop that i was really satisfied with...

So i just ordered the High end 15" MBP + High Res Matte Screen, i am a very weak person :/

I'm looking at getting my wife the base 13 inch model. She will only use it for school work and browsing. Still would the base 13 inch model play most online game on decent settings? Like World of warcraft or starcraft?

I was hoping I wouldn't have to spend that much either. The 15" prices are kind of high considering the GPU's, but there was no way I was going with the 6490M.

Well, that's because the people who participate in graphics card discussions tend to be gamers...

To be fair, the requirements on WoW are hardly what they were 6 years ago. I used to play on a single proc G5 with radeon 9600 and it ran very well. They've made it far more demanding over time.

haha, that's probably where I'm headed too. I don't NEED the better GPU now, but I'm coming from a 2008 imac and want to be able to keep this machine as long, and it doesn't sound like any other graphics option is competitive now let alone a year or two.

The other thing I'm contemplating is buying either an air or a 2010 MBP for a lot less money with the understanding that I won't be keeping it nearly as long...

MBA is a better choice

No it won't. For games the previous years machine were better however baffling that sounds.

They gone backwards on the low end machines with this update but we've seen a much more substantial upgrade in terms of the 6750m on the high end.

Anyone got links to benchtests with hd video rendering time or other performance tests on the 6750M 1gb vs the i5 2010 265mb 330m ??!

I'm going to sell mine and upgrade anyway, but I would like to see just how much of an improvement I get from this upgrade in terms of graphical power, and the 256mb vs 1gb difference.

No it's just that the price difference is small enough to justify paying a little more for a real video card with 3x the vram.

i just picked up the 15 inch 6750M. will be glad to see how it compares for you guys tonight.

i am also interested to know since i overclocked my gt330m
here is a copy paste i made on another thread :

ok guys, for those who got the new one with the 6750, how does it compare with the gt330 from the mid-2010 i7 15" macbook pro.

here is my exp with the gt330, i copy/paste what i wrote on another forum :

Thx God i found this forum !
i am a very very serious starcraft 2 geek and i own a macbook pro mid-2010 with the core i7 2.66GHz and the GT330M 512Mb GDDR3.

My goal with this machine is to test Starcraft 2 and get the best out of it graphics wise and also by performance.

My post will greatly help you decide if you should get the mid 2010 or the new 2011 quad core, as i am on the same boat with you guys, cause obviously my main concern is this :

GT330M vs 6750M = How do they really compare ?

First off, i want to point that all the tests i red on barefeet mac, geekbench etc are not really accurate for gamers like us because they use stock drivers and do not improve machine perf with latest windows 7 updates, drivers, backgrounds services etc.

My machine is running Bootcamp windows 7 64bit ultimate edition and has 4Gb of Ram (3.86Gb usable). i get an overall score of 5.9 in Windows exp index.

Details :

1- processor : 6.9
2- memory : 5.9
3- graphics : 6.5
4- gaming graphics : 6.5
5- primary hdd : 5.9

With apple stock drivers i had 6.3 in Both graphics, But i downloaded the drivers from Laptopvideo.com aka 267.05 which gave me outstanding results.

Plus i overclocked the GT330 with Nvidia inspector to :
GPU Clock : 650 (original is 500)
Memory : 900 (original 790)
Shader : 1430 (original 1100)

My fans and heat dont go up 73 degrees which is BEST.

Now the FPS in Starcraft 2 :

if i put all in medium i get 90-130 FPS in 4v4, Desert Strike Games
High, i get 70-90
ultra, i get 55-60
During gigantic battles, i get a steady 30-36 FPS.

Of course, keep in mind that the internet connection of other players can reduce greatly the fps during gameplay... thats a fact i learnt.

Now i gave you all my tests, and i want to know the same with the Radeon 6750 to really know if its worth it or not.

The other day i was testing an Acer gaming laptop with a geforce gtx460 and Starcraft 2 gave a powerful 70FPS out of the box with Stock drivers ! i hate acer laptop cause they are poorly made, but performance wise they seem to be very good. If the new 2011 macbook pro can achieve the same 70 fps ootb, i will go for it.

Waiting for your results guys

Apple has always put underpowered GPUs in the MBP. I'd get the 6750 if possible.
