6s+ - calendar touch issue?

Is anyone else having this problem? I'm not sure if this is a bug or my user error.
When looking at my calendar in month view, I try to touch a day and and it inconsistently brings up the day view. I can peek with 3D touch, but have a hard time selecting a day.
The workaround is to change to landscape where the day will select and show on the side.

Given that it sometimes works, I THINK I'm doing it right, but anyone has a tip, please share!

Double tap the day in month view.

Thanks. That's what I am doing. It's very inconsistent. Seems it's super sensitive to the pressure or something.
