My mom's phone is shutting off at 30 percent and when you plug it in, it turns on again and is at 30 percent still. Is the battery likely shot? She has apple care plus, so do they usually replace the battery or replace the phone?

I think some stores do change only the battery, but it might depend on other elements like availability of spare parts in workshop, availability of devices for swap, technician availability etc. In most cases I guess it will be swapping the phone.

My wife's 6s started doing that after she upgraded to iOS 10 (which she blames me for). A hard restart fixed it. Now she just has crappy battery life. I think Apple has some work to do on iOS 10.

They tested the phone and think it is software and not the battery. Crazy! They told her to go home and save her photos...she forgot to do that first;). And then do to a complete erase of the phone and a fresh start. Too bad I'm not close by to help her for a few days.

Having the same problem on my 6S. I also had this problem on the 6 and as far as I know a restore didn't help.

So either DFU or replace the battery, I am not sure.

    Any thoughts?

Mine was doing that last week. Try downloading an app called "Battery Life". It'll tell your your battery health. Mine was saying it's 23%, meaning the it's basically at 76% out of 100% health. Genius bar tested at 79%. Anything below 80% AppleCare will replace it for free, which they did on mine.
