Since Apple is on a kick for S models having an S word to highlight the upgrade, this one is pretty obvious.

S is for sapphire, which will be the big upgrade for the 6S.

It must be getting harder to think of things starting with S to use, so I bet someone brought this up when they were deciding whether or not to push it with sapphire this time.

Wow! Genius. Why didn't I think of that.

Yeah, I'm getting tired of the "S" years. Next year's should just be iPhone 7. Since more people can now upgrade every year, it makes sense for Apple to start trying to sell a major new iPhone every year.

A case my be redundant then.

I'd say that's a pretty safe bet. Granted I don't really care one way or the other as the current screens are pretty damned tough as is. Seems a lot to do about nothing. Np biggest problem to me is cracking which from all I've read is worse with sapphire.

I personally like the s monicker. Since the aesthetics are essentially they same I'd rather they don't go up a model number.

one day, and hopefully one day soon, people will realize the s doesn't really stand for anything.

But it DOES. The 3G(S) was for "Speed" the 4(S) was for "Siri" and the 5(S) was for either "Sensors" (TouchID/M8) or (64 Bit) depending on who you believe.

The S has historically described the biggest selling point of the mid-model refresh. They just scored an easy one for the 6(S) by delaying the sapphire screen lenses is all.

And no, sapphire will INCREASE, not decrease, the sales of AppleCare+. If you are silly enough to walk around with a sapphire screen that has no insurance against breakage you get what you deserve when you drop it. I'd bet screen replacement costs alone will double, and sapphire isn't indestructible, it's actually EASIER to shatter than glass (just much harder to scratch).

It's why the new camera lens isn't sapphire anymore. It broke too easily now that it doesn't sit flush. It's back to regular glass now for the 6.
