I am in no way going to spend the bare minimum on a 16GB iPad 2 when I can just wait for a new product to come out! :D

Why? The iPad 2 is a great price for the screen size, and would surely make you happier than a miniature version of it. Plus, now's the time to enjoy it. Better battery life than the iPad 3, just as fast, and has all the same support right now.

After doing just a small amount of research, the $200 to $250 price is very unlikely given the bill of materials to create the iPad 2. Apple's gross margin percentage on the iPad 2 is 39%. On the new iPad, it's 37%. If they sell the iPad mini for $299, it will be lowest percentage at 30%. I can't see Apple selling it for less than this.

Apple changing their strategy to become a loss leader in a market that they already dominate? Seems legit...

This logic is sound, there's no question about it, but Apple needs to maintain their dominance. The Kindle Fire sells well, and all evidence from gadget reviewers points to the Nexus 7 selling well, too. Apple could sell tons of these tablets for a profit. I'd fork over $299 for a 16GB 7.85" iPad mini. Assuming Apple's supply chain efficiency, they could probably sells these for $75 profit on each one. Of course, I have no real way of knowing how much their margins would actually be, but since the Nexus 7 sells for $200 and breaks even, I assume Apple could charge $100 more and make more money off each one because of their long-term component contracts.

Either way, I don't think it's farfetched to assume Apple shouldn't continue to ignore the Kindle Fire/Nexus 7. Moreover, this may sounds like the old "Apple can't continue to ignore netbooks" argument, but it's not since the aforementioned tablets actually sell in high volume.

Did you say the same thing when everyone thought the iPad would be 999 and they would never sell it for less let alone half.

Apple has never been a premium priced manufacturer outside of their old computer lines. iPods, iPhones. Airs, iPads etc etc have all been priced competively and only out priced by people selling absolute low end junk.

Apple has managed to master the art of selling a high quality device for the same price as their lesser quality competitors. This idea you pay extra for apple has. It been true for most of their products for a long time. Most of their products offer more quality and value than any of their competitors. The core of apples financial success is supply side which has been Tim Cooks for a while. If anyone can deliver a super high quality device while still making money it is Apple. It is what they do.

yea because 8gb of flash costs $100...

iPad

Apple wouldn't go below $300

Simply because,

(a if they did, it would be BIG news headlines.. &
(b It would too surpassing to all customers, as we all expect at least to pay a price out of Apple products (excluding accessories) for most stuff. so this would be "taken by surprise" as not very Apple-like,

Apple makes money on hardware, so why would they go for a mere $200 mark? 7 inch, or no 7-inch.

I reckon abut $350 would be a mid-point.

Keep it in the 250 market and I know what I am getting my daughter for Christmas!

I honestly wouldn't care if the ipod touch is $50 cheaper. I wouldnt read a book on a ipod touch nor would I attach it to my arm or set it on the treadmill to go running with.

IMO, the ipod touch and a 7" ipad are apples to oranges in comparison.

What's the latest on the mini? It's been awhile since we have got any news about it! And to be honest i am in the market!
