My hard drive crashed so before I sell the laptop, I heard I should do a "7 pass sweep". I'm not sure how to do this from the OS install disk though. Any help would be appreciated.

Boot the computer with the disk in the drive and hold down the option key. Select the disk and it will go to the installer. Choose the language and then look for the option up top for the disk utility. From disk utility choose the erase tab and go into options to select 7pass and then select the hard drive and erase it. (this is going from memory so someone else correct me if i am wrong... .i'm on a pc here at work)

How can you do any kind of a "sweep" if the drive is no good?

My local Apple service store told me to do a complete sweep so the buyer couldn't retrieve any data. I don't know if data can still be retrieved on a disk that's damaged or not.

That's it...Thanks!
