So it's time for me to jump from my 6S to something newer. What my budget allows is either the iPhone 7 Plus or the iPhone 8 (their difference is around 20€).The thing ia,I cannot decide between these awesome phones.

What lures me to iPhone 7 Plus is
-its screen size. I really want somehing bigger coming from the 6S.
-Its double cameras. A friend of mine has the 7 Plus and compared to the 6S its cameras are far ahead, especially in night time photography.
-To a lesser extend its battery life. Not as much as the other factora,I think its bigger battery makes me want this phone more than 8.

Though on the other side the iPhone 8 has
- Futureproofing/more processing power (although I am covered even with the power my 6S provides so,I don't really care)
-Wireless charging which is a big plus for me
-This awesome gold color.

But it lacks what 7 plus has. What do you suggest I do? Is the single iPhone 8 camera THAT worse than the double 7 plus one? Is battery life on 8 worse than 7 plus?Is it worth going backon screen size dor the wireless charging? Help me I cannot decide

In terms of camera of the 7 plus, the telephoto lens actually doesn’t do much in improving the image quality especially for night shots. In fact the telephoto lens won’t even work when you use the 2x zoom when the scene is not bright enough.. I would say that the 8 has a better camera as it’s a generation newer and by the fact that most users end up forgetting the telephoto lens after the first week of using the plus model..

Honestly, I wouldn’t recommend going from the 6s to 7 series.. a true upgrade would be minimally to the 8.. why not save up a bit more and get the XR? It’s gonna give you all the pros of the two device you compared..

I would never buy the XR personally.I would even sell it if had won it somehow and keep the money to buy something else.I just believe the screen is a fiasco and the I find the bezels big enough to be ugly...Personal preference.

So you say the 7 plus camera isn't worth it compared to 8.I see. Thank you for your input sir :)

More opinions are welcome

I am currently using the 6s also, and for me the choice between the two you are considering would easily be the 8, because I don't want a larger phone and I would like to have wireless charging and I also prefer touch security versus face recognition. However, you indicate that you really want a larger phone, so if I were you I would probably be leaning towards the 7 plus.

7 Plus has bigger advantages than the 8, screen size, battery life and the A10 is still fast and will be for the upcoming years, in fact my 7 Plus is as fast as my XS Max. You can get a wireless charging case which will solve the lack of Wireless charging with the 7 Plus. The 7 Plus Camera looks exactly the same as the X camera which is supposed to be an improvement compared to the 8 camera, in fact the X camera has more noise in low light situations than the 7 Plus.

But Portrait Mode on the Xr only works with people, not objects.

For the 2 years I used the 7 Plus, I only ever used portrait mode for the sake of testing it during the first week lol. To me the portraits taken are unusable unless taken in a brightly lit condition due to the smaller sensor and aperture of the telephoto lens..

The Xr screen is a fiasco? Oh come on, that's preposterous. I think you'd be nuts to get an 8 instead of the Xr, unless it's at a huge discount.

The 7 was not a great phone. It had LTE problems since it was rolled out. It took me half a dozen tries during the first few months to get one that would work, and now two years later it's refusing to connect on LTE. I realize that size may be an issue but I would not recommend buying a 7, ever, and especially not as a two-year old phone model (even if purchased new).

You stated that you want the larger screen so that's pointing to the 7 Plus. My wife had the same dilemma and chose the 7 Plus because she didn't want to use a small screen for the whole period of ownership.

Benefits that didn't get mentioned: 7 Plus has 3Gb ram and a clearly noticable higher ppi, full hd screen.

Truth be told,I am kind of tired with the non-plus screen size but still,if 8 can counter it with more useful features,I'm happy to give up on the screen size...Thank you for your input sir!

In my country the iPhone 7 Plus costs 560€,the iPhone 8 costs 582€ and the XR 746 so,it is a huge difference. For my wallet at least

I guess that happened when it was new. Many iPhones have such defects during the first productions.I believe after two years such devices are no longer in the market.

I may really regret buying a smaller sized phone after the excitement passes to be honest. But I may also regret buying the phone only for its size and ignoring the benefits of the newer generation.

As far as I can tell, the general consensus is that the double cameras are not really worth it and it all comes down to screen size

this x2.
My wife got the XR to upgrade from her 6s, and she loves the phone. I have a 8 Plus and honestly the screen resolution "issue" isn't notable in everyday use. The XR camera also destroys my 8 Plus with dual lenses, the camera is top notch considering its the same optics as the XS/Max minus the telephoto lens. If I was in your situation I would get the XR since it's the latest generation, has the best camera, and best battery life compared to the 7 Plus and 8.

Don't let the "low" screen resolution make you discard the XR as an option, the display is still high quality with good viewing angles, colour reproduction, contrast ratio, etc. I use my wife's XR a lot and have no issues with the lower res. screen, you won't notice it unless you have two phones side by side and are explicitly looking for it.

Lastly depending on carrier, the iPhone 7 was the first model to use the Intel Modem and had reports of connectivity issues, the XR uses the latest generation Intel Modem and is much improved compared to the first gen Intel junk. The first gen Intel modems also used a 28nm process, compared to the modern 14nm process the XR modem uses, which equals better battery life.

Personally, if it was between the 2, I would buy the 8. I used the 7+ exclusively for a year, and it was larger than I liked. Shirt pocket or when I had it on a belt clip (broke a couple clips).

I still use it as a backup phone, and it is fine for that, since I'll keep it loose in the car or in a separate bag.

I was on Verizon when I got the 7+, so I have the Qualcomm modem. My X too uses the Qualcomm. I switched to ATT when I bought it, but I bought it through Best Buy so got the Qualcomm model.

I didn't skip the current year because of the modem. Just because the X is still fine on ATT, and I spent too much this last year on other Apple products.

I switched from a XR to an 8. The screen wasn’t an issue at all, especially since the OP is coming from a 6S.

So the XR seems the best option.I guess I will keep the money and buy the XR a bit later.Thank you everyone!

Just a question, why the 7 plus and 8 comparison? There is an 8 plus too...though the XR is a great choice.

If you have fixed amount of money, and can't afford to go even a cent higher, and your top preference is large screen area, then your choice shall be 7 Plus.

If you want it to be a little bit longer future proof, a little faster, you want to be able to charge it via inductive charging, and you generally want all around newer phone, the you should go for 8.

This is how I see it, now the decision is yours.

I would say the 8, just because it will have longer support, wireless charging, true tone, however the camera is fairly similar to the iPhone 7, however nothing major in Leaps of technology in that respect. The 7 likely will start showing its ‘Age’ with iOS 13.

Screen size is the only truly important feature today imo. Just look at the pricing scheme, especially on the Xs Max. Why so expensive? Because what people want is a big display. I would take even an iPhone 6 plus over the Xr. Screen size is king and other features have not moved much nor are they important.

8. Generation (newness) *always* trumps size (Plus) or memory (by far the most worthless) at resale.

Plus your phone will simple last longer with the A11 inside

I really think that's the best choice and the most likely to give you solid value for your money in the coming years. The 7 is just not a great phone on LTE - the rest is good, but you don't want to buy into that in 2018. The 8 is a better phone (wife and one of my adult sons have one) but if you're buying today for the next few years, buying the XR makes the most sense, even if you have to save some more for it. IMHO/YMMV, etc.
