sry i meant 25sec. hit the key next to it.
Thanks for the correction

No worries. FYI, my 17" with the stock 5400 RPM drive boots in 25sec. I'm actually going to be trying to install a Vertex 3 in it tonight that's waiting for me at home. I hope I can get to to work.

The 5400 drive is fast enough. Once an app is loaded into memory the hard drive doesn't matter anymore.

Ahhhh, sure, as long as your app never does any disk I/O, you should be fine.

What app does any disk I/O besides when loading and saving? Even the most demanding apps can save and load in seconds with any speed HDD.

yusukeaoki, since you have one of the 7200 rpms that Apple puts in their laptops, my question is, are you experiencing the noise and vibration The-Pro mentions?

Well, this is another idea. Keep the 5400 rpm HD and invest in 8GB of RAM. This would reduce the disk I/O considerably in many scenarios, wouldn't it?

I bought my MBP with it's stock 250GB hard drive (5400 rpm).

After a couple weeks of use, I know I wanted much more storage and decided on a 7200 rpm Western Digital Scorpio Black series drive with 750GB of space.

Much to my surprise, the power draw from the WD drive was lower than the Hitatchi that shipped with my Mac.

Not saying it will outperform a SSD, I just needed the extra room for my junk.

This depends on you're usage. Some apps are more RAM intensive whilst some can be more HD intensive (some can be both) but for general light usage, 8GB of RAM will not make any difference in performance.

If you want to go even more faster, buy a SSD but as you know Apple rips you off with SSDs:/

Apple 128GB SSD costs $100.
The cheapest name brand 128GB SSD on Newegg (Kingston in this case) costs $219.

Apple 256GB SSD costs $500.
The cheapest name brand 256GB SSD on Newegg (Kingston again in this case) costs $459.

Apple 512GB SSD costs $1100.
The cheapest name brand 512GB SSD on Newegg (Kingston AGAIN in this case) costs $1139.

Are they expensive? Hell yeah, but it's hardly a ripoff.

Don't forget that you're quoting the upgrade prices that you add onto the price of a MBP with a hdd already.
