Kind of underwhelmed with 3.0

Upgraded last night to 3.0 (with no hassles)

Got to say that I'm quite underwhelmed with it. There really doesn't seem to be much exciting to do with it. No new apps or changes to apps so it's kind of boring to me.

I may cut and paste every once in a while but I don't think it's going to change the experience much. I like the search but 95% of the time I could already find what I need. Those will both be helpful in the times that I need them but it's not often. Also, I kind of hate the space the search bar takes on the top of the individual applications. I looked for a way to turn it off in the applications (but leave it on from the home screen) but that doesn't seem to be there.

I think Apple needs to add some more end user (rather than developer) candy to these updates. I see the lists of 96 additional features but it's kinda arcane.

FYI I am upgrading a 1st gen iphone so perhaps the 3G phone gets more stuff. I have a GS on pre-order for Friday which I am getting primarily for the speed, the sound volume and the space. But as for the 3.0 upgrade I'm kind of yawning.

its not a major upgrade so you right to be underwhelmed.

the 100 or so new features are quite small and you'll prob find them
as you use your phone from time to time.

you will be overwhelmed by the 3gs though, it has new features
which are quite major.

still, 2009 updates to hardware and software have been OK.
Im expecting next year to be a lot bigger though
 
Most of the really cool things seem to be 3GS only. No video recording or voice control for 3G for example.
 
You guys are impossible to please. Seems like yesterday when everyone was whining about Copy paste and now it is here it is "underwhelming". What were we expecting from a software update, turn your iPhone into a toaster?
 
Do you have a list of "non-boring" features you'd like to see?

iPhone OS 3.0 may not make me jump up and down with excitement, but it fixed or added most of the what I wanted on the iPhone. The only thing I'm waiting on now is for Apple to release iDisk Mobile.

The copy/paste function is underwhelming because the very first thing myself and many people said was, "This thing need copy paste". It took Apple so fricken long to add this rather simple feature, that most of use got stuck using our work arounds.

For me, there are a few little changes which have 'floated my boat' :)

- Combined calendars, and Address Books (Exchange & Mobile Me together)
- Delete individual SMS messages
- Free Internet Tethering <cough> On O2 </cough>

It is the combined calendars (and Address Books kinda). This was one of the things that were making me look at the Palm Pre.

For a freebie, I think it's good!

I'm not trying to be a malcontent, just laying out how I feel.

There's just been so much hype over this that I'm surprised it does not feel like there's really much new to play with. Especially with Pre coming out, I would like Apple to keep a strong edge over the competition.

Like I said, I think Apple needs to add some end-user features with major updates. I always looked forward to some neat new Google map thing, or calendar addition but nothing here.

I guess that they focused a lot on video and some features like tethering and MMS that ATT doesn't support yet. Maybe on Friday as I make my feature length films it will be more exciting.

Plus I DO like toast. Maybe the could work on that. Since it's not the correct form factor I could settle for a remote control to a real toaster. Or perhaps I could tether my toaster to the internet. So many options.
 
I think that you will be underwhelmed until some of the new apps that really take advantage of the SDK come out. I've said it all along, this upgrade has some cool features, but the real meat is the freedom that developers now have. Once push goes into full swing, peer to peer apps start popping up and other SDK features are use for the first time, you'll be if not overwhelmed, at least whelmed.

The thing that most people are talking about right now is adding push to this or that app, but the real sweetness will be new apps that are designed from the ground up for these new features and to do things your phone could not even half do before.

What do you think developer candy is for? It turns INTO user candy.

Yeah, it take a little more time, but the rewards are greater. Would you rather have the few hundred Apple employees on the iPhone team bringing you candy or the tousands of developers bringing you candy?

It'll just take a little more time.
 
i put my phone with 3.0 installed right next to the dog's leash and it still hasn't taken him for a walk.

what? the 3g s takes the dog for a walk? i don't care, the 3g s is a minor upgrade and i don't want it to walk the dog anyway. i'm waiting until next years iphone that will print money and fly and cure diseases and, and, and......

Why does it matter how long it took them? What matters is that it is here NOW for you to use. 3.0 has loads of other new features and options that were not available before in 2.2.1 which most people were already perfectly happy with.

What magical features were you expecting 3.0 to bring?

I didn't even touch on the area of new 3.0 APIs including peer to peer and mediaplayer which will bring a whole new bunch exciting apps.

You can always wait for iPhone 2011 which might include the do-my-laundry feature that you guys have been requesting for the past 3 years. I am sure though you will find the time to bitch about how it uses Persil instead of Aerial.

See my earlier post ... for me, there is a "neat new ... thing" in Calendar - combined calendars. As I said, one of my frustrations pre-3.0 was the fact you could only have 1 calendar. In my case, either my Exchange (work) calendar or my (Personal) Mobile Me calendar. Now I can have both - displayed separately or 'synergied' (See what I did there!), together!

Big win from me!

I don't know what my expectations were, but I have to say I really love the new features. Yesterday was my son's birthday and simple things like being able to pick multiple pictures to email out to friends was very cool. It was cool to set up some multiple calendars using the new copy and paste feature to get the Ical URLs correct.

Also, it's been nice having the autofill so when I log in to various sites, I dont have to enter my username and password everytime.

I'm pretty happy with the update. I don't think 'overwhelmed' would be a good description, but yes, I am happy with the update.

I looked again at the calendar app and did not see anything notable. I have Mobile Me (which frankly I only use to sync with my MBP) but not Exchange. I will have to poke around the new features threads to see some instructions for what I might be looking for.

Historically Apple has always written a few killer apps themselves to showcase features long before the developer community gets to things (witness the 1st Gen phone itself which was all Apple internal created). If there are all kinds of killer features to come, I would have thought that Apple would have incorporated a few of these types of things into their own apps. Perhaps there aren't killer new features if none of them impacted Apple's own apps at all.
 
I wasn't expecting anything revolutionary, just continued refinement of the OS plus a few new features, all of which they delivered. I think that alot of people are looking for a new look to the OS or something like that, but for me the 3.0 is a definite step forward for the Iphone, no matter what your version.

Voice Recording is available on ALL iPhones.

Saw Voice recording (haven't tried it yet).

Read more carefully (not an insult) but I said VIDEO recording or voice CONTROL might be interesting.

Voice recording does not seem so interesting. Actually I think I had an app for that long ago.

If you enable your Exchange calendar in Settings, when you open the Calendar app you can choose which calendars it displays.

I have two Mobile Me Calendars (Work & Personal) and my Exchange calendar configured to be displayed.

I hadn't seen this mentioned ANYWHERE. I only discovered it by accident. This to me is worth it and was something I was seriously looking at moving to a Pre for!

Contacts.app will also allow you to search through the Global Address Book in Exchange as well. Pre OS3.0 you could get to the Exchange Global Address Book email addresses when sending email from 'Exchange' but that was it. Like I said, for me, that's a big win as I don't have a company mobile and it was a pain if I had to ring someone at work and didn't have their number in my Mobile Me address book.
