When someone is calling my phone the screen turns on, but half way through the ring the screen turns off, but the ringer keeps ringing. Makes it very difficult to answer a call!!!

It's likely the case you have on your iPhone.
It's blocking the proximity sensor.
No case on the phone.
Phone is sitting on the table.
I don't think the phone uses proximity sensor until it is connected anyway.
Hmm... I'm not sure what to tell you then, other than take it in to Apple.
Maybe try a restore.
Maybe your proximity sensor is broken, my screen doesn't turn off at all on my new 3G S. Im taking it to the apple store tomorrow.

Here's your fix...
Go to Settings>General>Accessibility>Zoom>Off
Turn the Zoom feature off, and the problem will go away.
OP has 3G not 3GS.
Where did the OP say that? If you're judging by the signature, it IS possible it hasn't updated yet. This is the exact bug with zoom enabled, and a ring to black screen would be a HUGE coincidence.

I have the same problem, except my screen goes black once I answer the call and its impossible for me to hang up or do anything else--can't turn screen back on, can't go the main menu by using bottom front button. Even turning it off (sometimes my only choice) is not easy. In other words I can't hang up and even if the other person hangs up the screen still won't go on.
My phone was set to turn off the screen after 2 minutes, then 3 minutes, now 4 minutes and still no change.
My iphone is 3G and not 3Gs
