Apple seems to have quietly "upgraded" the stock 256GB SSD

I got my replacement 3.06 17" MBP today with the stock 256GB SSD. It's still a toshiba, but a different model.

The old model was:
Fujis 655-1526A
Fujis THNS256GE8BCAA

The new model is:
Galas 655-1558A
TSD-THNS256GG8BBAA(B)

I didn't save my old xbench run, but I remember it scored about a 150 or so.

Here's the new one:

Which is pretty darn close (overall) to the x25-M:

The X25-M still kicks its ass in some areas.. but that's a pretty big improvement over the old one they used.

What do you mean by replacement? What computer does this one replace? Specs?

So it seems like Apple is using the new Toshiba drives with the upgraded speeds yes? I don't know how to read that chart.
 
Did your old computer have the new firmware on it? I only ask because is it possible that the change in performance is due at least in part to the new EFI update?

I was under the impression the 17" uMBPs never had the SATA issue.
 
Thanks for pointing out this thread to me. I am glad that I also decided to bite the bullet for the BTO SSD and it turned out not to be a bad investment. But you still end up replacing it with the X-25M?

If it says Toshiba I'm positive its Toshiba, lol obviously stating the obvious. In any case, I think Apple is speeding up the SSDs, so finally they are starting to become better to buy from Apple.
 
Don't mean to bump an old thread but this is the closest I have found to what's actually in the current GTO MBPs (Been googling casually for 2 days). Anyone know the brand and speed of to the 128gb they offer?

I'm buying a 17" MBP soon (next week or so, once my student loans clear) as my first mac (I'm new to macs and SDDs!). I'm trying to figure out if the SSD is worth the extra costs. I think 128 would be annoyingly small, but 256 would be fine. But the increase in cost to go to the 256 from the 500gb @72000RPM HDD is $540. Would it be better to downgrade to the 2.8ghz CPU and stay with the SSD. My original plan was to get the 3.06ghz with the 500g HDD (and possibly replace with a SSD later on). The speed of the SSD is tempting though.

I've been trying to learn and weigh the positives and negatives about SSDs, but I've heard many negatives about the Mac stock SSDs. Being new to this, it is pretty hard to keep track of whats being included in the BTO systems because of the differences in Early-Mid-late 09 models, and Apple not saying what parts they are using.

Yes, I would recommend sticking with the 2.8 and going SSD. You'll see bigger performance gains in the SSD vs. the .26 GHz increase. The only positive I can think of buying from :apple: is that the drive is under warranty by them.

Or you could not buy the SSD now cause the prices are still ridiculous....later..you could always buy the Intel SSD and replace the HD yourself...

but in any case...IMO..it is not worth buyng the SSD from Apple...even if you buy from newegg..u still get the manufacture warranty..and plus u have the apple hard disk which you can ebay...
