750GB available at OWC for $189
1TB will available in 2 weeks for $289

i'm still confuse to save money for ssd, or just buy this drive :(

is it fast ?

Fast is a relative term. Won't be as fast as SSD of course. It's faster than smaller drives at the same rpm.

Sleep is now much quicker than the old drive I pulled out.

I am sure you'll find benchmarks somewhere. Maybe barefeats.com
(none at this time, but they do have 500gb 7200 rpm benchmark)

$199 on Amazon and free super saving shipping. No tax for me, depends where you live I suppose.

Its a 2.5 Drive thats in the Early 2008 MBP's such as mine. So it should be a fairly easy swap, right? - looking for a 1 TP :p

750gb and 1TB 2.5 inch drives now available

Running the WD 750gb in my June 2009 15" UMBP just fine.

Hello,

This is the most confusing thread I've ever read.

If someone could answer the following I'd be most grateful..

1. Will the 1TB drive fit in a Unibody 17" macbook pro?

2. Will this 1TB drive fit in a Unibody 17" macbook pro's superdrive space via a converter?

Regards,
Simon

what are these drives running at ? 5400rpm ?
I really want to switch the drive in my unibody but I was holding off for a SSD but maybe ill pick up one of these

Consultant,

As you are one of the few people with the 1tb drive, would you mind please running some benchmarks so we can see how fast the new Scorpio drives are?

It would be much appreciated... I cant find benchmarks anywhere on the internet.... and am really confused if I should buy this, or go with the 640gb drives.

thanks.

Will these fit in Mac Minis?

Not without some modification to the drive cage. I tried to fit a 12.5mm drive into an 09 mini but it is literally 1-2mm to tall. You could however get it to fit with shaving off a bit of the drive cage on the one side. I personally wasn't willing to do it...... yet.

The red highlighted bits are the offending bits that prevent the installation of the 12.5mm drives in the mac mini.

If you were willing to shave those down to the same height as the silver protective sheet you could possibly get a 12.5mm drive to fit... no guarantees however as I've not tried it. Not game to at this time either as the machine is still very much in warranty (and yes I know I opened it, but honestly, how will they know if i put the old ram and hdd back in when it needs repairs?)

Like someone else said, this thread is confusing. I know I could open my MBP up and see for myself if a 1TB drive will fit but I'm not planning to buy it tonight and I'm sure I will have a response by then. So...will a 12.5mm drive fit into a June09 13 inch and have you checked/tried for yourself? Thanks.

The 750 GB (12.5mm) apparently fits in all unibody MBPs according to OWC:

750GB WD Scorpio Blue 5200RPM 12.5mm SATA Notebook HD with 8MB Cache - Fits all Apple MacBook & MacBook Pro 'Unibody' Models (13/15/17"), MacBook Pro 'pre-unibody' 17" models, and PC Laptops which support 12.5mm SATA Drives. New with 3yr WD Warranty. (WDGWD7500KEVT)

And the 1TB is the same size I take it?

Any news if these will fit into the supadrive space on a 17" unibody macbook pro?

This turns out to be NOT possible. From AVForums: "No is the answer, you cannot use the drive taken from a WD My Passport 1TB external drive. It is a custom drive with USB connector soldered on to the drive's PCB which is extended a few mm over the end of the drive. there is no standard SATA interface. The housing is simply plastic wrapped around the drive with no electrical or electronic components or connections. I have never seen anything like it."

Wow. What a piece of garbage.

I've never heard of a 5,200 RPM drive. Typically they're 4200, 5400, or 7200 (with 4200 very uncommon these days).

Typo?

No, there are drives that run at speeds other than the typical speeds (4200, 5400, 7200, 10,000). Most of the ones I've seen running at 5200, etc are large capacity drives fwiw.

The earlier generation drives are SATA or EIDE drives with a USB interface adaptor. It's the 2008 and 2009 drives that has a custom build USB interface soldered onto the drives PCB.

Ah well. I guess I can't hack the drive to use on my laptop.
