Lots of comments here about screen resolution and glare, with many users buying the 17" mostly because of inferior PPI of the 15", versus others complaining about eye strain with the 17". I personally am about to switch to the 17", but not sure I would do it if they offered a 15" with 1680x1050 and matte screen.

Oh shoot, I wrote 1650x1050 in the poll options. Anybody know how I can change that (or ask an admin to change it) to 1680x1050?

Glassy 1680x1050.:) I'm not bothered by the glass, even when in a sunlit room, and it gives a sharper image. A higher resolution would be sick.

I forget how polls work here, but on most forums the poll can be edited if you can edit the OP.

And 1680x1050 glossy FTW. Still waiting on the explanation of what it does to the light to mess up the color.

But really its okay because we get what you mean.

obviously the higher resolution is the best choice.

I'm guessing if we can get well over 100 votes it might be worth the effort sending Steve a link to the poll.

hahah 100? Do you realize how small of a number that is compared to Apple's customer base? When you get 100,000 votes or more, than that might be something.

Well, it depends on how representative apple thinks the macrumors crowd is, and on how sinificant the votes outcome will be :)

I need to ask: why?!? Higher resolution > Lower resolution

Simply because the whole OS is not DPI independent, I don't want to be squinting at small text, menu bars, buttons, ect.
The 17in MBP just has too high of a DPI IMO for what I want to do. I suppose I need more face time to adjust but I came from a 1440x900 17in iMac.

IMO it depends on what becomes the standard in the industry. Once the majority of 15.4 laptops adopt 1440x900 resolution at least, and it's about damn time they did, apple will go a step further and probably offer more.

It's pretty clear people want a Hi-Def option. And its pretty clear people want a matte display option alongside the glass screens. Make it happen :apple:

Here's a thought I got now that I have the 17" matte (couldn't bear the blotchy glass screen of the 15" any longer): it would be nice if Apple used the same bezel size as in the 17" on the 15.4". It looks much thinner. They could, in fact, probably increase the display size in from 15.4 to 16.0. In that case having more pixels would be easier. I really love the display on the 17". I increased minimal font size in Safari and Mail, and this way have similar absolute font as the 15.4", but much more legible letters (I personally found this terrible on the 15"). Of course the screen is much nicer for viewing photos, etc.

I love having high res. But honestly, I think 1440x900 on the 15" is pretty damn good. I had a Dell latitude D820/830 with a 15.4" @ 1920x1200 and it was pretty nice, but as long as I can play a 720p video with some room to spare I'm good. As nice as 1080p would be, it's kind of pointless on a screen only 15.4"
