No, they cost around $600/$700. But you pay only $200/$300 upfront and pay the rest over two years. it's like a loan.

You don't think the price of a house is what you pay as a down payment, do you?

Remember how I used the word subsidized?

In this case he's paying the same amount over the two years as someone who got a subsidised phone. So they're not the same thing in this case.

To sum up.

Paying 700 for a phone still locked to a single carrier is for suckers. hahahaha.

You didn't say that part. You just said paying 762 for a cell phone for suckers. Your original comment.

But he can use that cell phone for a year (or a month, whatever is left on his contract) and then sell it on Ebay for 700 and then switch to another carrier if he wants.

Locked to a carrier ≠ locked in a contract. I payed around that for my iPhone and am locked in a carrier but have a Pay As You Go plan, so I only pay what I want to pay.

Just preordered my 32gb 3GS....
And I've never felt more ripped off.

bad move apple.
Darn subsidies.

Did you accidentally order it?
Did it not tell you the price before you confirmed?
Did it not show you what you were going to get for the price?

Stop whining. You knew what you were getting and you still chose to pay for it.

That's how much good cell phones cost.

That's a very subjective term- "Good".

Any phone is good if it satisfies your needs. I would be completely satisfied with my old Razr, and would consider it good.

If I was a business person, I most likely wouldn't consider a Razr a good phone...

I"m sure you'll sell your 3G for around 300-350 so you honestly didn't pay that much in the end.

I wouldn't trust Ebay for a new release phone when you can get it from the AT&T or Apple store for the same cost even sooner. Good luck with that

763 - 300 or so for after fees selling your current 3G. 400ish total for your 3GS. What's the big deal here?

That's not really accurate. Telcos will sell you a phone for a lower price (subsidized price) in exchange for a commitment (contract), generally for 2 years. You are not really paying it off over the 2 years. If so, then I would expect my monthly rates to drop after the 2 years, which they do not.

Yup, thats unsubsidized high end phones for you! Look at the Nokia N97 or a similar device(although it should be unlocked for that price!)

You actually dished out $763 for this incremental upgrade? HAHAHAHA. It's not even unlocked!
Bad move by YOU not Apple. If you had the smallest bit of common sense and intelligence, you would have found some other way around to try and cut the price here and there as I've read many posts regarding switching lines, using other people's upgrades etc. I love how Apple fanboys are ripping themselves to death. It's so ironic how they whine their ass off when they bought the phone on their own will. I congratulate you for at least getting 2 pages worth of replies made to your ignorance.

Getting the 16gb 3gs and i will live with somewhat limited memory. for 399.

sold my 3g for 395. total cost? $23 with upgrade

No brainer.

$750+ is not unreasonable for high-end phones. Most top of the line Nokias sell for that much as well. However you would expect the phone to be unlocked at that price point.
