More HD space than 7GB with Snow Leopard ?

Did anyone else get more than the advertised 7GB hard disc space saving when installing Snow Leopard on their macbook. Before I installed Snow Leopard I had capacity 232.57 GB and after upgrade 249.72 GB so I had
available 49.86 GB after upgrade 65.24 GB. That is almost 17GB not 7GB ?

You are actually gaining about 6-7Gb of space compared to Leopard. The extra is due to Apple now using Base 10 to measure HD space.

The bigger your HD, the more your apparent extra HD space.

While they did change how the space is computed, SL is definitely small then 10.5. Just consider the fact that apple is not including the PPC frameworks/libraries. Even when you toss aside the base 10 vs. base 2 issue, there's still a significant savings in SL over Leopard.

Yes, about 6-7GB. :)

On my iMac, free space on Leopard = 196GB, free space on Snow Leopard = 217GB

Apparently, I've now got an extra 21GB of free space.

Used space on Leopard = 109,462,433,792 bytes. Used space on Snow Leopard = 102,678,700,032 bytes.

Bytes in Snow Leopard are still the same as bytes in Leopard so it's actually using 6.3GB (6.8GB Base 10) less space.

They can't they changed the definition of "GB" from gibibyte, to gigabyte, so for every 1 GB on your HDD, you are "gaining" 24 MB.
 
After installing SL = HDD is 14GB lighter!

I thought it was supposed to be 7GB... I got 14! :eek:

Before installation it was at 71.36GB, now I'm at 85.84GB. Did you get similar results?
 
I had 13.51GB before installed SL. I installed SL and then checked again and I had 52.75GB... so I recovered 39.24G. I'm pretty excited about that because I kept creeping up to being totally full for the last few months and had to clear a bunch of stuff to get down to 13G...
 
Hey, I gained 13.2GB of free space! LOL OK, for real (comparing bytes used to bytes used) I actually only picked up an additional 3.7GB of space. I guess I got ripped off. ;)
 
OK guys, YOU do the math:

Original hard drive (55G) had:

47,484,043,264 bytes used

After Snow Leopard install:

34,822,660,096 bytes used

Difference, something like 12.6 billion bytes, or by my calculator, that works out to about 11.8 gigabytes -- 12.7x10^9/2^30.

All measurements normalized to "base 10", I gained 11.2GB.

The amount saved depends, in part, on how many printer manufacturers you have installed drivers for. On our MBA, I weeded out everything except what was needed, prior to the update to SL, and saw 8.1GB gain.

edit: I put "base 10" in quotes, since the old method was a combination bases. Defining 1024 vs 1000 for a "K", then multiplying by 1000 or 1000000 in decimal to arrive at MB or GB.

True. Language translations is another. I had weeded out everything when I did my Leopard install originally and did the same again when I did the SL install. Hence my gain of only 3.7GB.
 
Any "new" GBs welcomed - however you count them ;^)

Does this explain why the TimeMachine partition on an external FW800
drive went from 1.0TB to 1.11TB?

Do I care? ;^) I had 1.0 of the 1.5TB set aside for Time Machine - should
I re-partition? Seems like it shouldn't matter . . .
