Finally!!
Standard updates over the last few days have updated the kernel etc so decided to plug my 7800GTX (BIOS Rom hacked as a FX4500) back in and boot to see what happens and success ! :D

Mine is set to log in automatically. This is after downloading all updates. No dice. My card is the pc 4500 flashed to Mac.

Hmm - It must be something else that I did then - thing is I have poked about quite a bit on GPU stuff, initially to get the 6600 to support 2d/3d acceleration - You know about the MSI interrupts setting in yaboot.conf :-

"
Nouveau driver has issues with MSI interrupts, use yaboot parameter

  • nouveau.config=NvMSI=0
You can also add it to your /etc/yaboot.conf and update using sudo ybin -v (see the FAQ for more info)"

Also try using synaptic to update if you're not already - on my PC Ubuntu installation I have had one instance where Ubuntu update has said nothing to update but Synaptic has marked some updates.

Finally I may be wrong but I heard it may even be down to the revision of the 7800 and even which ROM was used to change the firmware to make it usable in a mac. (I didn't flash mine but purchased already flashed so don't have the ROM) Yours is also a real FX4500 and not a 7800GTX, maybe that's somehow the issue also.

Other than that I don't think I can help as I don't really know myself why it's started working.
