I’d love some advice please.

My 7 plus is a good phone had battery replaced by apple I’m December. However one day I forgot it was In my pocket jumped on motorbike... hit the road camera broke and it took me a while to get it fixed.
This has caused dust spots and basically poor image quality ever since.

I haven’t been greatly ready to fix it as I am a photographer and usually try to use dslr.

Now I need to quickly blog and update visual journal regularly at uni, my phone is always on me and that’s how they want us to do it.

Mine is taking crap pics so

Do I go for replacement cost of $549 aus (it’s a 256 gb)

Can trade it in on Xr for 849 base model
XS trade in $1259

All seem expensive options but I can’t justify buying a point and shoot as I have limited space and would rather one device to do it all.

Thanks for any advice,

Haven’t touched xr or xs models.

I have the iPad Pro but find it awkward to use as camera

Thanks, sorry didn’t really offer much regarding $.

I may be able to stretch to the xs the camera seems a nicer model, it may be a tight week, then would prob need more than 64gb so a little more there.

I originally started looking at a compact camera, then that started getting $500-$1000 for the model I wanted so then started considering upgrade or fixing iPhone.

I ride a motorbike so space is limited, carrying just one device seems like a better option.

Personally, I wouldn't spend $550 to fix a phone that's already getting long in tooth. But, as Newton's Apple said, it's really up to your finances.

I'd get it fixed at a repair shop if no other options for repairing. I think Apple can replace camera modules at AASPs.

Can't you just take it to a 3rd party 'fix it' shop and get them to replace the camera module?

I wouldn’t suggest using third-party. Not for extensive repairs when it comes to the camera Module, the only way I would suggest third-party would be for a simple display or battery replacement, anything more complicated, I would let Apple make the repairs, because they’re officially trained in things like this.

Keep in mind, 3rd party repair shops may compromise the water resistance when opening/re-sealing the phone for repairs. That's a risk I wouldn't take.

I work at a 3rd party repair shop and we pay attention to replacing the seal. You just have to find a trustworthy one.

By the way the battery and screen replacement is more risky at 3rd party repair shops than other components. Some phones I open up that were serviced by other 3rd parties have some interesting aftermarket batteries and screens in them. The other day an SE battery was wrapped in gold colored foil with a big red sticker on it 'double capacity!!!'.
Not to mention the cycle counter can be zeroed out easily. That is for MacBook batteries too.

Also the screens are risky, some shops are just straight up not honest about if their screens have original LCD or aftermarket. The digitizer can't be original, but the LCDs can be saved and refurbished from broken displays. That way repair shops can have original screen assemblies.
There is also a whole list of quality ratings for aftermarket screens, so there is that too.

A good 3rd party repair shop is nothing to be afraid of. Just ask for specifics, the quality of the components, the repair procedure, etc. They should be able to tell you all of that. Sometimes we bring out parts from our stock to the customer's hands to examine them if they ask us for it.

Don’t you think that third-party repair stores would be trained in resealing the water resistance? (Perhaps not to Apple spec’)I can’t imagine them disassembling an iPhone and then reassembling the phone without having any type of water protection, that would be a complete liability to the store or a company as a whole.

Maybe, maybe not as Lekro mentioned above.

Point is (for me, at least) I'd much rather know my phone is definitely sealed up tight, and not be second guessing all the time. It's of little consolation to me that I can go after the 3rd party company for damages when my phone is sitting there shorting out.

I Kind of felt the same just not sure trusting 3rd party. I know many can do a very good job, but unsure leaves me hesitant to spend on older tech anyway. I walked into a store today, they offered me 460 AUD for my iPhone 7plus, I said yea ok. Now I have a shiny new XsMax 256gb, seems great will have a play with it and see how it compares. Initial thoughts are very similar but slightly prettier. I’ll dig into the features a little more and see how it goes, I am sure I'll be happy.

Grats on your upgrade.

On the previous note, you can even ask the shop to show you the adhesive strips they have in stock. They should be able to show you.

I went to buy a case at a third party (big chain store) they had a deal on iPhone XS Max -512GB same price I paid for 256.

I went into apple got a refund and went to the chain store to take up the deal, they threw in a free $30 case. Very happy a good upgrade

Was it a sealed box with original accessories? Condition of the phone? If the price is too low it could be a third party refurb.

Yes all legit, a reputable business here in Australia, Apple’s direct tech competitive shop. Even apple acknowledged the deal was a good one, they could only offer 10%

I’d say 8 Plus? Or fix your 7 Plus or XR, you may find the XS screen too small, but if you used 3D Touch then the XR doesn’t have that.

Oh never mind you got a Max.
