You may be getting the full rom since you are running a beta version. Anyone running 8.0.2 will get the small OTA update.

didn't work for me on iPhone - stayed at "Unable to..", worked immediately via iTunes hookup

Yep, I assume so. I was on Beta 2, and my updated stated 2.2 GB...while others on 8.0.2 is showing around 127/128MB.

I'm getting "This version of the iPad software (8.0.2) is the current version." in iTunes 12.0.1.
