Just unusual for people who don't live over there. I can't imagine having something be released at 6PM from Apple.

It's a good time. The working day is done. Plenty of time to fix/restore if something goes wrong, ready for the next working day.

I doubt there would even be a GM since it's only adding a few things and some bug fixes. It's not like it's a massive update going from 7.x say to 8.0.
