So I have a snow 600mhz iMac G3 they’re currently dual boots 9.2.2 and 10.4.11 and I wanted to try out OS 8.6 bc I’ve heard it runs better and more stable than 9 and some of the weird compatibility issues 9 tends to have with older stuff and I genuinely just wanted to check it out, but I found out that my model is one of the post DV ones where they locked out OS8 support and made the minimum 9.0.4, how hard would it theoretically be to hack in support through hacking the ROM file or open firmware since the hardware is probably not that different from what the older ones used

So I actually spoke with the creator of that unsupported project and he told me to come here to ask this question since that project was aimed more towards G4’s and is very experimental, I also tried the disc and it did not work and just left me with a blank screen on boot

Perhaps try spoofing it to an older machine identifier.

How would I go about doing that and will that mess up my installs of 9.2.2 and 10.4.11
Enter the following in OF, using a model identifier 8.6 is compatible with instead of PowerMac10,2. Then, mac-boot to boot.

Code:
dev /
.properties
" PowerMac10,2" encode-string " model" property
" PowerMac10,2" encode-string " MacRISC" encode-string encode+ " MacRISC2" encode-string encode+ " Power Macintosh" encode-string encode+ " compatible" property

So I typed this in painstakingly by hand because I didn’t know how to run a batch file and I decided to go with PowerMac 2,1 since that’s the last one that supported 8.6 and I got the system to report as that but the compatible would stay the same PowerMac 4,1 is there anything else I need to do or I’m doing wrong

I also tried booting the stock 8.6 disc and it still just showed a blinking missing folder before booting into my 9.2.2 installation

The PowerMac 2,1 model was used on the iMac DV SE which I think was the only G3 to support up to tiger and as low as 8.6, so I shouldn’t have any trouble if the system reports it as that

So I looked into further research in terms of the system folder on the install disk I tried to boot doesn’t have all the necessary **** to boot, so I was being dumb thinking copying over would work, what’s the best way I could “obtain” a fully installed 8.6 system folder to try putting on my drive
