I'd have to highly recommend visiting Katoomba, and seeing a little of the stunning Blue Mountains.
:)

Only 2hrs or so on the train from Sydney...

Congratulations,

I agree with your decision to let the agents handle the headaches, you will enjoy Australia at least twice as much that way.

Please, please, next time, allow a bit more time, and spend at least a week or two in Tasmania. It is an island of relatively unspoilt awesome beauty, 5000 klms of rugged coastlines, wild mountain ranges and the people are somewhat unaffected by modernity.

Best of luck with your trip and enjoy.

rijiMacDij I would love to visit Tasmania in the future. My cousin goes to university there and I also have a friend who's going to boarding school there right now. I wanted to visit them but there are not enough time this time :(.
Again, I just decided to let the agency to handle all the stuff because there are a lot of stuff going on in terms of school and family/friends. I don't want to have to book tickets, hotels and make up schedules on top of that :p.
How hot is it going to get in December? Would t-shirt + shorts be too cold?
Thanks again for all the help guys! I will definitely let you guys know how it goes after I visit :D.

Nice itinerary but be prepared to get very wet in Cairns at that time of year.People do say though its the best time to experience the tropics and the rainforest-but take an umbrella or anorak.

...How hot is it going to get in December? Would t-shirt + shorts be too cold?...

Australia's has storms and cold fronts and the hot weather dies down a bit so its really good weather but it is definitely shorts and tshirt weather.

if you happen to get a heat-wave while your here prepare for temperatures of up to 40C (104F) in which has youll need flip flops singlets and sunscreen! prepare for hot nights and make sure you have access to air conditioning and a pool/beach.

You guys are making me want to stay for 80 days instead of 8 :p! Btw, I'm going to enjoy the hot weather and wearing my summer clothes again :D. Next on my agenda, SHOPPING FOR SANDALS! ;)

correction! flip flops :p

definately go to the gold coast if you can make it. best place of them all ;)

Yeah, I'd probably spend 7 of those days in New Zealand, the day lost just flying there and back. Alternatively you could just skip out Aus altogether:D

Update: first day in Sydney, and it's absolutely amazing! I don't think I have ever seen a city this beautiful! Went to bondi beach, the rocks, rose bay, watson bay, double bay, and around the city centre. The blue sky and treelined streets are so pretty! The beer and wine ain't bad either ;).
Tomorrow I'm going to the opera house, the bridge, a cruise around the harbour (I think), some fishing market (not too sure what that is), and shopping! :D
Oh and in case any of you guys are high schoolers (gr.8-12) or know one, please help me out by filling in this survey at another thread of mine : https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/405717/
Thanks!

if your thinking of comming up to the gold coast i would recommend against it atm, there is a big low depression near us and its raining and blowing a gale (60-100kmph winds!!!!!) it sucks :*(

Oh crap, too late now. My travel agency/group is going there the day after tomorrow. Hopefully the weather will get better soon :).
Btw, saw the Sydney opera house, ate lobsters at the fish market, cruise around the harbour and sunburnt myself yesterday. Today's my first day in Cairns, and damn its amazing! I'm really falling in love with this country! I visited the rain forest and the aboriginals. I love their boomerangs! :D
Scuba diving tomorrow!
HAPPY NEW YEARS EVERYONE!!

so how did the trip go? im interested to hear how you canucks think of aussieland. ive met lots of canadian import hockey players and they all say they love it here.

Sorry, somehow this thread didn't show up in my subscription so I haven't checked it in a while . Btw, the trip was amazing! I really loved the laid back, beach going lifestyle in Australia. The weather was awesome, and the beer's great ;). I'm actually considering studying abroad or go to university there when I graduate.

Wow, Australia! :) I've never been there.. But I hope to go there soon.. Could you please give us a report after your trip!? Will glad to hear it from you to be sure that Australia is the place to visit! :)
Little advice for those who suggest program to our friend-traveler: I think we should find out how old he is to suggest proper activities for him! ;)

Glad you enjoyed your trip but its is being unusually wet because of La Nina. Its great thoughas its breaking the drought and filling the rivers and reservoirs. At one stage a couple of weeks ago two thirds of Queensland (a Big state) was under water.

Yes, It is an awesome country. I emigrated from the UK a few years ago and would never go back. We live in Sydney which is a stunning city. A perfect weekend morning starts with a leisurely brekkie at the Rocks or Darling Harbour gazing over the water. Its sublime.

We do have a big big B i G problem here.

NO IPHONE. My life won't be complete until I own one.

Would love to visit Sydney some day, I envy any of you who have been there! I was lucky enough to spend some time in Melbourne and I fell head over heals with the place, I thought it was the most brilliant city I ever visited, I'd even put it ahead of New York (which I love). The big disappointment for me on my Australian trip was Perth, I really disliked the city, soulless and artificial....sorry if any of you are from there

I'm too late for the OP but a very informative and entertaining book about Australia is Bill Bryson's "In a Sunburned Country". He's a very witty and fun to read author and he traveled all over Australia for the purpose of this book. He writes not only about his experiences but also about the history, geography, eco-system and so on. It's not a travel guide, no hotel recommendations or any such thing, but there's plenty of those already. He's my favorite author, very likeable and amusing. BTW, if you're already in Australia, I believe the book has a different title, so just look for it by his name.

You can probably get an idea from my previous posts, but overall, I absolutely adored Australia! Every city I went to was beautiful (Sydney, Cairns, Brisbane and Gold Coast), although I preferred the former two because it rained by the time I reached Brisbane and Gold Coast. I guess because it was summer and the year round warm weather, the streets are all tree lined and the trees looked very green and healthy. There were miles and miles of blue, cloudless sky (unless it was raining of course), and the scenery was just amazing. I especially loved Cairns- there were so many outdoor activities you could do! Scuba diving, snorkeling, hot air balloon, sky diving, riding in a helicopter etc. Too bad the day I went it was New Year's Day, so there weren't anyone working for the hot air balloon or sky diving, so I missed the chance. But I have no doubt I'll be back there. There's no way I'll only be somewhere that beautiful only once in my lifetime.
Also, the beaches are fabulous, the weather is great for the most part, and the people are really friendly! The seafood is quite good also - I went to the Fish Market in Sydney and quite enjoyed their lobster and oysters. Be sure to try the kangaroo, crocodile and emu meat as you can't find those anywhere else!
As you can see, I absolutely loved my time there, and was considering moving there. Now that I'm back in Canada and moved back into the normal rhythm of things, I doubt the practicality of moving and adapting into another culture, but I still think I would live there for a while some day. I don't feel like I've truly lived until I get a chance to enjoy my life there. To be honest, I was a little doubtful about the trip because all the work it took to go, but it was absolutely worth it. I was blown away; I didn't expect anything like it. So if anyone's considering to go, I would say go ASAP! :D
Oh by the way, I'm 17, and it's she :p.

Haha I remember the tour guide told us not to be down because of the rain, because it would only rain when truly special people came.

Yeah I loved NYC too, I always thought that I'd live there once I get to live by myself, but now I'm doubting that decision. The trip to Australia made me do a lot of thinking and had made me put my life into perspective. I always thought I want the fast and hard life that NYC offered, the concrete jungle, the lights and all that, but now I'm drawn to the natural beauty of Australia. I wouldn't mind living there and just enjoy a relaxed lifestyle, surfing on the weekend, jogging along the harbour or the tree lined streets in the morning... Good thing I still have many years ahead of me to decide.

Oh, my fault, sorry! :)
Thank you for such a nice and detailed report! It inspired me to go there! ;)
Did you go with your friends or BF or parents or alone? I think it is very important with whom do you go with... Company really matters! :)
