This would kill Apple in the business world because companies are not going to allow corporate data in iCloud. I call BS.

The only way I could see no 64GB is if (a) the big screen and LTE caused battery issues and/or (b) the physical size of the device limited the memory chips, in size or number. Despite Apple's obsession with thinner and thinner, this iPad actually is thicker. So that already tells me they struggled with the internals. I still don;t believe it, but still, you never know with Apple (eg, the second gen Macbook Air removing the lighted keyboard).

The ONLY reason I would buy an 8GB iPad is for my band.

I currently use my 16GB iPad 2 to trigger live samples from the DJ Soundbox Pro app through the PA (808 Bass Drops for Korn songs, song intros, etc.) which sits on my mic stand with the iKlip. I'm constantly worried about some drunk idiot knocking into my mic stand and dropping my iPad to the ground.

A cheapo 8Gb iPad, dedicated for this use only, would serve me well, especially if I could get it slightly used off of someone who bought and wants to get rid of it cheaply.

Then again, seeing as this won't happen, anyone want to get rid of a 16GB iPad 1 super cheap? ;)

i've been making fun of people calling certain things a del breaker. but i have say, 32GB max may very well be a del breaker for me. i have almost 50gb of apps on my current iPad. while the cloud is a nice feature it really does little to help maximize storage on an iPad. you have to dl what you wanna watch or listen to. how long will your 3gb of data per month last if you have to dl everything to save space on your iPad? plus i can't cloud everything. my comic books or movies. not everything i have was purchased from iTunes. comics and movies for 2. this is the complete opposite from what i wanted. i wanted more storage, as much as possible, certainly not less!!
lets hope this is a bad rumor!!

I go through phases where I collect and collect apps and then just purge them because they do not get used on a regular basis, and I filled the 32 GB I have. Even my desktop computer only has 12GB of Apps. My wife has her 64GB model filled with movies and video, and would be very unhappy if she had to get a smaller model.

Right, because the 'high' price point is really keeping a lot of people from buying the iPad as it is...

High is relative. If you have no use case for it, I guess 500$ is relatively high. If they sell a ipad 2 at 400$ (truly theoretical value pull from my arse...), then you might sell to a few people that wouldn't have bothered in the first place.

I do fall in the "no use case" category, but I also fall in the "latest and greatest" one too, so if I by one, it wouldn't be the "discount" one...

Semi-related question: if one has 2 Macs with iTunes and home sharing along with iTunes Match, is a 16GB WIFI version enough? I would occasionally put on 1-2 movies for the kids for long car trips. (Say "are we there yet" once and no iPad for you!)

I agree

Okay I call BS on this entire story. 8GB on an iPad does not make sense due to the operating system already taking almost two gigs. Lastly Apple makes the most margin on the iPads with the largest capacity so for there not to be a 64GB option is NOT an option.

I am going to venture to guess we will see a 32GB, 64GB and 128GB iPad 3 at $499, $599 and $699 respectively. No 16GB iPad 3.

I pad 2 will stay at 16 GB and 32 GB only and be priced at $379 and $459 respectively.

Just my two cents.

I think we will see a 32/64/128GB iPad 3 with a 16GB iPad 2 as the "budget" model.

It takes surprisingly little to use up that space. Add in a few iBooks, pics and apps and that space dwindles fast. Such a machine is of limited use, but that is not to say unusable.
my point is not everyone uses it the exact same way. that's the reason why they make different hard drive sizes. I have one playlist with about 20 songs (eventhough i have 10,000 songs on itunes match), I end up streaming more from pandora and i heart radio app than anything. Add facebook/engadget and a few news apps and that's it. It's used mostly to surf the web/stream music/and look at emails. My mom, sister, dad, and brother in law all have iphones with 16gb. they just like how user friendly the phone is and they literally will not install any other apps on it. they are fine with the ones that are already on the phone. I know tons of people that are like that. Then I know a few people that have pages and pages of worthless apps. But i would say the majority is not going to need tons of space...bc the average user still doesn't know how to do much on it.

I suppose if you use airvideo for streaming video content, dropbox to hold documents, and primarily use the ipad just for surfing the net and checking email, then I can see how even having just 5+gb of memory can be a luxury.

For instance, my friend bought a wifi-only 16gb ipad2 (the cheapest version) to put at home. Her mother uses it mostly for streaming videos online, and they rarely ever bring it out of the house. In her case, an 8gb version would have worked just as well, seeing how they don't really store anything inside.

However, I doubt the savings can be substantial enough that people won't be tempted to simply get more than double the storage just by paying a little more. I can see a niche market for this offering, but feel it won't be large enough to earn a significant profit.

That sounds correct - I could only see an 8G iPad 2 be used as Internet / eReader device. - there is so much FUD out there its hard to expect what they will do. But if price of storage has gone down, I would expect the size to increase.

iCloud is not a viable replacement for local storage, and it won't be until data caps are gone, and fast reliable internet is available everywhere. Also, iCloud needs a Dropbox style implementation where we can put in whatever files we want.

Yes-that's in Mountain Lion and perhaps sooner.

A touch MacBook Air with Ivy Bridge and detachable keyboard would be extremely cool - in that case forget the iPad completely.

I have on a few occasions predicted an 8GB iPad 2, and the rationale for it makes sense. If flash memory saves them some good money they can easily price it at $349 and it could become the educational iPad (increasing adoption of the textbooks on iPad that were recently introduced).

It would also take care of some of the budget conscious customers who otherwise may go Amazon or some sub-par android tablet.

When Amazon releases their 10" Fire, you can be sure it will be at least $299 to give it some cushion room between the 7 inch's $199 price tag. So for $50 more they'll be able to get an actual honest to goodness iPad, and that will prevent Amazon from creeping into the 10" space.

But for the rest of us who like using the newest stuff and the best stuff, we'll continue paying $499 for the iPad 3 with retina and all the other benefits.

Although ANYTHING cheaper that has the word iPad on it would entice more buyers, I think most people would be disappointed with an 8GB offering. It would store very little in todays world of 256K mp3s and/or lossless Apple tunes as well as the inability to store more than 2 movies.

Typically when Apple creates a lower-end product, it's not just 1 spec that is different (like storage)...it's usually a few things like system memory/cache and possibly even processing speeds. I believe this was evident in some of the iPhones and iPod Touches.

I, for one, am extremely excited to see what the 3.0 has for updates...and I really hope it's more than just double the screen rez...I'd like to see some more software features/enhanced software features (better Slideshow/picture stuff, better web browsing features, more Parental controls/granularity of security, the ability to have numerous family email accounts and have the iPad prompt for a pw each time to open that account, enhanced Facetime performance and features (3-way calling?))

I certainly don't buy into this article at all. If anyone listens to podcasts like MacBreak Weekly or MacCast, most everyone that is a legit press source thinks the opposite. While no one knows for certain, they make good points about how the iPad 3 need MORE memory than even 64GB and believe 32GB for the new retina display is a must. The higher res screen not only needs more graphics power, which iPad 3 will have, but also more memory for those needs.

Wow, what a joke. 8GB iPad is ridiculous, 16GB is bad enough. I really hope this is just some bogus time waster of an article. My 64GB iPad 2 is already pushing its limit on storage. I really wanted a 128GB.

Why do you need so much memory if you're connected to iCloud?

Not sure about 64GB but 128GB would cost a pretty penny even for Apple. Not realistic right now, but give it a few years who knows.

Oh, so those 64GB SD cards you can get for under $80 now aren't realistic either? Apple buys flash by the millions, I doubt a 128GB iPad for $700-800 would be a problem.

Why do you need so much memory if you're connected to iCloud?

They have Wifi over the Atlantic Ocean, in dead spots, on the road, in third world countries, to connect me to iCloud? I'd say LTE would be great if it weren't for the fact I watch HD movies on my iPad. I'd be able to get through one before AT&T throttles my bandwidth.

If they can release an updated Ipad 2 for $350 (8 or 16 gig) I think it would just destroy the competition.
