So I was offered a reasonably good deal of $100 for a working 800 MHz iMac G4. It has 512 Mb RAM and and 80 Gig HDD as well. No install disks, and somewhat yellowed, but it works great. I don't have much use for it since I already have a macbook pro 13" and an iMac 27", but I've always wanted one of those lampshade imacs. I'm sure I could find some use for it...so that's the question. Is it worth purchasing it? And if I do decide to grab it, what could I use it for?

I bought mine for $100....it had 768M RAM which I upped to 1GB...and replaced the 5400 rpm drive with a larger 7200 rpm drive....and installed Leopard. Now I too am looking for a goods use for it, but it sure looks nice sitting here!

Mine is similar in stats and I've run both tiger and leopard on it. If you don't need a leopard only feature like quick look or time machine and you don't need any software that requires leopard then I'd recommend tiger since you'll get much snappier performance.

My original plan was to use it for watching Hulu, but even though it easily plays DVDs and HD video from iTunes in full screen flash video is chunky :(

Did it come with the apple pro speakers? Those are sweet and look great when paired with the iMac G4

    iMac G4 800 MHz

It has tiger right now...but I also have a copy of Leopard I could hack on there. I was thinking of using it as a hulu box, but I hear reports that it doesn't perform well with Flash. It did not come with the apple speakers, but I have a USB sound card that runs to my stereo I could hook up. I also have a 250G 7200 rpm HDD I was going to put in there, and fill it with my music.

Well i have a 1Ghz iMac G4 (Running Leopard) it chugs along at a reasonable pace most of the time but Flash brings it to a complete standstill. It can just about play a 240p video on youtube without stuttering.

Great looking machine though, makes a great kitchen hifi :D
