I got a new 2TB hard drive (White label WD green with Orico enclosure) and I tested the speed by copying some apps. I deleted the apps but there is still ~800MB used on disk. I erased the partition with Disk Utility, I set off Spotlight to re-index it, I browsed through hidden files (and found nothing consuming that much), and I plugged it into another Mac. Still ~800MB used! How do I get rid of it? Without erasing the disk again, because I started backing up a machine to it?
