I don't understand this comment. The only line they could possibly update right now would be the Mac Pro which is coming at NAB more than likely. Sure, they could have introduced it earlier, but with creative professionals holding out for CS3 anyways, it made since to wait. As for the other lines, what could they update them with? Intel's newest chipset isn't even shipping yet.

the Ati-M X1600 is soo old in iMacs.. Please Apple, put new GPUs in iMacs. CPUs are fine with me, but that GPU is freaking old..

And I won't even mention ancient CPU called "Core 1 Duo" in Minis and that GMA950 ****..

Update your desktop computers, Apple ! Dammit!

No, he's right. They haven't updated the Macs nearly enough since the Intel switch. The mini's still at CD. The iMac is still using the same GPU as when it was released. They've not done anything to update the systems in any significant way in 15 months. That's a LONG time. Apple's all about iPods and iPhones and set top boxes now, apparently.

Bingo.

Hmm... I'm hoping for something like this... a low end (or mid-end) laptop.

For example:

Desktops:

Mac Pro- High end work machine
iMac- A mid-end multimedia and do-everything machine.
Mac Mini- a low end machine, meant for windows switchers and computer newbies.

Laptops:
MacBook Pro: High end portable work machine
Macbook. Mid-end (or low end, depending on how you look at it) portable multimedia machine

And...???

Where's the low/mid-end? I'd love for a bit cheaper laptop. $899 anyone?

OK, it seems clear that Apple won't upgrade the iMac's GPU until the X1600 is superceded. It hasn't yet, and won't be until June, when ATI releases its X2xxx series. Yes, it would be nice to have an X1950 in the iMac, but it's just not gonna happen. Maybe we'll get a X2600 in June-July, and a quad core processor when Penryn is released at the end of the year.

In terms of other ugrades, yes, it would be nice to have 8-core Mac Pros, but if you want them so badly, just shove in two Clovers, and stop whinging. I know it's expensive, but for people who can justify the purchase of a Mac Pro, I'm sure it isn't too much of a stretch. Apple will upgrade the computers when they deem the upgrade is worth the bother, and not before.

And we're not going to get upgraded Macbook/Pros for a few months yet, cos there's simply nothing to upgrade to.

And so what if the Mac Mini uses a Core Duo processor? I mean, if you need a 64 bit processor, why the hell would you want a Mini? You'd buy an iMac, or if you BYOSKM and want more power, buy a Mac Pro. If a Mac Pro's too expensive, then join the lobbying for a mid range single Conroe/Kentsfield CPU tower.

Remember that 20th anniversary mac or whatever it was? It came out 21 years and not 20. Maybe Apple will release something on April Fool's for their 30th anniversary?

Waiting 81 days for a small improvement that may or may not occur means you don't really want to buy the Mac in the first place.

Thanks for the clarity... now I can call my shrink and tell him I can take this week off because you made me see the light...

Well, here's to hoping for a 15" MBP that is under 2.5 kg that will be released before the end of July.

It will hopefully have:
• 2.6 GHz CPU (if it's not available at release, then 2.4 GHz should do fine)
• Standard 2GB RAM, upgradeable to 4GB (for a reasonable price, of course)
• The X2600 Mobility, hopefully with 512MB GDDR4 RAM
- More likely that it will come with an X2300, which would be far better than the X1600, I'm sure
• As much Robson Flash Memory as Apple can jam in there
• A higher resolution screen, whether it be LED backlit or not
• 160GB HDD standard, upgradeable, of course
• At least 5 hours of "claimed" battery life
• A redesigned case would be nice, but I don't really care
• Of course, Leopard and iLife 2007

Everything else can stay the same, I don't really care about iSight cameras, or new keyboards.

I should think that even if this doesn't end up happening, this prediction seems very likely to me, and so if the new MBP isn't this, I should think it will be very close. Except for maybe the graphics card, which could be anywhere between staying with the X1600, maybe the X1650, the X2300, X2600, or maybe even one of NVIDIA's new Go 8-series that will probably be released about the time that ATI releases their GPU spread, easily in time for WWDC, and/or the release of the Santa Rosa MBP.

I like the sound of that but the graphics card at 512mb i dont think will happen maybe as an upgraded version like standard is at 256mb instead of 512mb, but it seems a good prediction and i would be very happy if that was the specs.

You are wrong. The X2300 while having a bigger number is a successor for the X1300, and it still sucks compared to the X1600.

Taken from ATi's specification pages:

* 157 million transistors on 90nm fabrication process
* Twelve pixel shader processors
* Five vertex shader processors
* 128-bit 4-channel DDR/DDR2/GDDR3/GDDR4 memory interface
* Native PCI Express x16 bus interface
* Dynamic Voltage Control

* 105 million transistors using 90nm fabrication process
* 4 pixel shader processors
* 2 vertex shader processors
* 128-bit 4-channel DDR1/DDR2/GDDR3 memory interface
* Native PCI Express® x16 bus interface
* ATI PowerPlay™ 6.0 power management technology
* Avivo™ Video and Display architecture

Guess which are the specs for the X2300?

Hint: not the better one.

In fact it is absolutely pointless to go X2300, it only supports DirectX 9, which nets it zero advantages over the X1600.

Well, we'd better hope that the TDP of the X2600 ends up at under say 25W...
Can't see it happening, but whatever.

And I was under the impression that the X2300 was on a 65nm process?

Oh, ok. It seems possible that the "X2300" is not what it was supposed to be. I thought the RV610 was going to be called X2300, and that it would be released at the end of May. It seems they have just created a crappy GPU, and decided to call it the X2300, although I don't have time right now to reserch it properly. Well, replace the "X2300" in my previous post with whatever the codename RV610 ends up being in May.

Oh well, here's to X2600 256MB GDDR3 being stock on low end 15" MBP, and X2600 512MB (GDDR4???) being at least an option on the high end 15" and 17" MBPs.
