2008 15" Macbook Pro bought February last year. No problems noticed apart from artifacting with the Arabesque screensaver from time to time if I put the machine to sleep a lot that day.

you wouldnt believe it, but september 2007 - 2.2Ghz, 8600GT 128MB. its still going strong and has had nothing wrong with the video card.

Running almost continuously in graphics intensive tasks since October

I have been running my 2.4 Ghz MBP Classic almost continuously since October 2008. I have it help out with the SETI project by donating my CPU time. It has a really high graphics load screen saver that I keep on as well. I doubt most MBP's get this much use. I've had absolutely no problems at all!

-live long and prosper.

it's really cool, I'm currently analyzing a signal from the arecibo radio telescope from arecibo, puerto rico, which I can see from google earth!

Dec 2007 2.2 MBP SR. When on the desktop it's hooked up to a 22 inch monitor.
No problems here so far.

No problems here with a penryn 2.6GHz MBP with a 512 8600M. I usually run the fans at 3000rpm using SMC fan control, so my temps are a little cooler than most. I have used the GPU for gaming in Windows 7 and it still works fine: I can run Fallout 3 in ultra-high shader3 detail mode with all the eye candy cranked to 11.

I bought my MacBook Pro on June 25, 2008. So far my GPU seems to be doing fine. I use my MacBook Pro with a 24" external monitor a lot of the time. I am not a gamer, but do quite a bit of video editing in Final Cut Express and I assume rendering is hard on the GPU. So far it seems to be fine. I will keep my finger crossed it won't die!

I bought mine on the 17th of June in 2008.

I game extensively on my mac. Crysis, Half Life 2, and Bioshock. I also use Pro Tools 8 which really isn't graphically intensive, but it heats this machine up pretty nicely.

My goal is to burn this thing out. Hell a couple of days ago I started XP without setting the fan speed to 6000 rpm in OS X. I then went onto play Crysis and had the machine go into emergency standby mode for heat.

On a normal day I have the fan speed at 5000 or 6000 rpm. It keeps the heat at 90 or 100 F.

Hopefully i'll get the thing to die and have it replaced. In all seriousness I haven't had a problem with any GPU issues. I push this thing pretty hard on a regular basis.

I guess if one uses SMC fan control to run the fan speed at 5000 or 6000 it keeps a lot of the video problems at bay.

...what does moving to Japan have to do with making this your primary machine?

I'm already in Japan and have 5 computers in the house - they can be found bigger than a bread box now-a-days:D

Well, it has a lot to do with the fact I will probably be moving into 3 separate places in the first couple months of being there. :)

2.2 SR from July 2007. I game very heavily on it, and push it constantly. No hardware failure to date. :apple:

O Hai.

MacBook Pro Penryn Purchased Late June. Was my Gaming Machine (Reached about 90c on the desk) until 2 months ago, and is also my general use machine.

Nothing Wrong.

My Nov. 2007 17" MBP died this week. 2.5 days from when I dropped it off at the genius bar Apple had it ready to go with a new motherboard. Hope the replacement GPU has better solder bumps this time :)

Bought my MBP in April 2008 and still no problems on the 8600GT chip front. (although I may have to replace the superdrive). If the chip failure really is inevitable then I will report back here if and when it does fail. A friend of mine who bought his 8600GT MBP a few months before me though had his fail and replaced.

My July 2007 MBP SR 2.2 would have been fine if I had posted in this thread back in May, but it just started freaking out two days ago (it's been really hot lately). I suddenly got a bunch of pink pixels all over the screen, computer froze completely, and then i got several kernel panics while trying to reboot. Its working off and on lately, so I'm bringing it in to an Apple store tomorrow night.

Most of the time, my computer use is pretty mild, email, movies, itunes, Matlab, VMware Fusion, youtube, but every once in a while I get into a game for a few weeks, CoD2, Halo, things like that. If the replacement motherboard lasts another two years, i MIGHT be willing to give in and get a new computer by then, but only 4 years of use is pushing it for me.

early 08 MBP....works fine

I don't really push it too hard though

So what happens if it does break one of these days?

As MrZebra says, any faults in the 8600m GT chip are covered by apple for three years, whether you have Apple Care or not. So as annoying as it is, you will at least get it replaced and repaired. (Although the replacement chip will still be another 8600m so it too will go wonky eventually...) Doh

Early 2008 Penryn MBP
No failures or problems what so ever here. And I game frequently too.
