I got an odd beast, a 867Mhz QuickSilver G4 with no L3 Cache, tho EveryMac says these systems came with 2MB L3.

Clearly we can see from the pictures it lacks the RAM for the L3, yet the CPU sticker clearly marks it as a 867Mhz part.

Must have been some custom configuration that lacked the L3, or EveryMac is just wrong?

According to Mactracker, that configuration exactly matches the "Quicksilver 2002ED" model.

What happens if you plug in a CPU that does have L3? Some people have said that the L3 is also crippled in the firmware of low end quicksilvers.

I don't have any CPU's compatible with the QuickSilver with an L3 to test, but it doesn't matter anyway this Education model lacks the L3.

Given the MacTracker data @Amethyst1 provided, this appears to be another case in which Everymac got the specs wrong/omitted/overlooked (there was yet another one I stumbled upon not too long ago — namely, the factory options for a minor revise of the MacBookPro4,1 17-inch model in October 2008, but it’s probably not worth forwarding to EM).
