Going to buy a mac and just wondering one thing. Will having the 8800 effect the GUI in anyway? I heard that the 2600 was better than the 8800 unless it was used for gaming so I was wondering if the 8800 would make anything look worst than the 2600. Or make the GUI or anything run slower.

thanks. Im really cautious in buying a new mac and finally switching the the mac osx.

i don't see how the 8800 couldn't handle simple gui animations....it should out perform the ati 2600 in every aspect...also if you don't like osx(which you probly will love)...then simply just install bootcamp to run windows or linux.

Some early adopters of the 8800 in both Mac Pro and iMac machines noted some poor performance in 2D animation, such as the dock. Apples Core graphics engine seemed more optimized for the 2600 judging by performance benchmarks reported below.

OS X 10.5.2 The 2600 out performed the 8800 in nearly everything but games and 3d that uses OpenGL. The difference in performance was 20% or more.

OS X 10.5.3 The 2600 and 8800 nearly even, but the 8800 is not outperforming the 2600 in normal daily desktop tasks.

With Apples announced future plans of tapping the GPU for more processing power you can expect that the 8800 will make a much better showing under OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard)

When it hits the streets we'll both know :)

I expect 10.5.4 will be released next month. The primary changes will be for support of the new iPhone firmware and MobileMe.

Get either one. Anyone of them will be good enough for your needs. :)
