Been thinking about getting another 8800GT so that I can add a third of fourth monitor to my Pro, but it seems it's not available on the Apple site anymore. I can't find it ANYWHERE online either. (Don't live in the US, btw)

Now the only things available are the 4870, which apparently can't run alongside the 8800, and which you can't put two of into the Pro, so that doesn't help, and a new one by NVIDIA, GT130 I think, but that's for for Mac Pro 2009 models only?

How am I supposed to upgrade now? So much for the much touted upgradability of the Mac Pro... Anyone have a suggestion?

8800 is discontinued yes.

if you don't need extra graphics power, a GT120 is fine for running more displays. It works in the 2008 mac pro too.

Are you sure? It says (early 2009) on the website. While the ATI card says (early 2009 or early 2008)? Will it work alongside the 8800GT?

The Mac Pro is upgradable, but they're not gonna keep manufacturing an old card like the 8800GT forever.

I don't expect them to, but if they don't they should make sure there is a card that's compatible with the 2008 model. Like the GT120. If it's not then it's not upgradable.

I have a GT 120 alongside an 8800 in my 2008 Mac Pro at home, works just fine.
