If Apple introduced the 8GB & 4GB iPhones at $399 and $299 in June and kept the supply artificially low such that most people would have to pay $600-$800 on eBay to get one (remember Wii?), everyone would be happy now... ;)

We paid the price of being early adopters. It was a good, 2 month long f*ck - and worth the $200 premium ;)

2 months you say???

It's actually one month and a few days. The iPhone came out on the 29th July.

This had got to be the biggest and fastest price drop in history.

I don't understand why everyone is complaining. You like your iPhone, it was worth $599 to you when you bought it, otherwise you wouldn't have bought it. What is the problem? You paid $599 for something that was worth $599 to you.

Bingo, I paid $600 for my iPhone and I think it's great. I love surfing the internet from the comfort of just about anywhere, checking email, easy texting, you name it. Never having used a full featured phone before, it's like a whole new world, and worth every penny as far as I'm concerned. Would I have liked to have paid $200 less? Sure, but that's nobody's fault but mine.

Bzzzzt, wrong answer :)

But no matter WHEN it happened, the numbers would be the same: people getting an iPhone $200 cheaper than you. If the drop happened in 4 months from now that would be acceptable. Instead, it happened today.

So the people who are so angry and yelling about lawsuits and petitions are angry about a 4 month window in which some OTHER people got a big discount.

It's funny to hear about lawsuits because Apple dropped the price! I'm amazed that even in sue happy America anyone would pursue such a thing.

If Apple has only sold 750.000 iPhones so far and expects to sell over 10 million by the end of next year, only 7.5% will potentially be unhappy. Of that number, probably only half are seriously disgruntled. Just like they were about all the minor issues that accompanies any Rev A product.

I never feel sorry for early adopters. Their greed to be the first inevitably overtakes their common sense.

What this price drop means is that Apple is serious about taking on the smart phone market across the world. The high price would have turned off a lot of EU consumers. In this field, marketshare is everything. Way to go Appple!!!!

To all of you that ask if you are happy with the iphone I say this; it matters NOT. Sure there is a price for early adoption, I can accept this. However, NEVER have I ever seen such a drastic price cut in such a short time at RETAIL. I'm not talking $3k PS3's on ebay, I'm talking ANYTHING at retail being price slashed 33% in 70 days OF INITIAL PRODUCT RELEASE. Someone PLEASE show me otherwise. Ok, you can't I know. Stop trying to justify how Apple raped us all who bought, they did. The main reason why I am upset is that the price of the iphone should have been $399 ALL ALONG. If they can do it now, they could have done it then.

[...] Still, if the phone was being built such that one million phones sold were enough to drive down the production costs by 33%, then Apple should have just bit the bullet and dropped the price from day one. Seriously, this was a lame move. If the iPhone had debuted at $400 it would have sold sold a million in under a month. Of course, at that price the lines that were would have been twice as long, making life miserable. Considering the AT&T mess, can you imagine how bad things would have been if the price had been lower?! [...]

Note that in the quarter end conference call in July, Apple CFO predicted much lower margins for this (Sept'07) quarter, so they had probably already planned these price cuts...

Why? Did you buy it to use it or did you buy it for bragging rights?

I'm sorry, but I can't sympathize with people who buy products for bragging rights. And if you bought it to use, then there's no problem - it still works, does it not?

Why is it important to you that the price remain high? Really think about that. If you didn't know about the price drop, would you be suffering?

read the rest of my post... there was a bit of sarcasm in there that you may have missed... and actually, i bought it because my PPC 6700 died about 2 days before the iPhone release... so i cancelled my sprint family plan, paid the $714.00 bill ( 2x200 early termination, and the rest fees and monthly service) then went out and bought an iPhone for 600.00 and bought the wife a new phone on ATT service as well...

so no i am not really that concerned about the price drop... although it would have been nice to chuck that 200$ savings at the horrendous bill that sprint threw at me... (funny thing is i was only under contract with one phone, but they still charged me for 2... bastages).

So anyway, read the rest of my post... i even stated that i will probably waste more money on the next model that comes out and give this one to the wife...

maybe i need to start using sarcasm tags...

This is really overshadowing the new iPods.

Apple is a different company with different customers. Not many companies have a loyal fanbase that will line up days ahead of time to buy their products. Sure, it happens on occasion with a game console or something. But in large part Apple customers do it over and over, when a new version of OS X comes out, a new iPhone, etc.

There is a goodwill issue that everyone seems to be missing. Many of us feel like the iPhone 8GB has probably always been priced internally at $399 from day one, but Apple decided to tax their most loyal fans at a premium of $200.

On the other hand, some serious shake ups must have happened. Why did they even bother producing and packaging 4GB iPhones? It had to be a last minute decision to cancel them? maybe? The 4GB actually WERE underproduced, making one think that they knew they would be in
very low demand. So why did they bother in the first place?

Here's a couple of reasonable arguments... Did they plan this in advance and "tax" the most loyal customers? I can't really imagine, Apple is not populated with idiots, they had to know this would happen. I suspect what Apple sees here is a real opportunity to get a significant chunk of this market. Sales were high at what was a pretty substantial up front price point (although as nagromme has been pointing out, overall ownership costs made them a very good deal). They saw this, costs are undoubtedly going down, so they moved. Probably a smart move overall after all this blows over.....

How about the IPO prices? Latest example: LLNW!

Now I feel cheated, and ripped off

HI,

On June 29th, I waited in line and bought an 8 GB iphone. I'm a students and saved for months in order to buy the iphone ($600). Today, I just discovered that only two months later the iphone is $200 cheaper. Now I feel cheated, and ripped off. Apple should give us some form of compensation like a $200 rebate / refund or store credit.

I'm hoping that Apple will listen instead of taking advantage of their most loyal customers.

I am sure Apple wants iPhone to reach critical mass before "lookalikes" from Nokia, Samsung, LG, etc. show up.

Anything Else?

Ok, I think we have all beat the dead horse. So go sign that petition, call Apple customer service and complain, stop buying Apple products from now on, or grin and bear it.

Those are the options, yelling back and forth on here does not get your 200.00 back.

Ya, it sucks...I would be mad two, but I didn't buy one, until tonite! lol.

So I'm happy as a clam, so everyone who paid 600.00 going to be mad at me because I waited and am going to get one now for 400.00? It's not my fault they dropped the price, but I'm glad the did.

Apple screwed ya, I agree, point made, now what are you going to do about it, besides bitch and moan for 2-3 weeks on a form about it?

To all the early adopters that are whining about the price drop,
I have zero sympathy.

You had the cash, you liked what you saw, you ran out and bought it. If you didn't feel it was worth the price, no one was putting a gun to your head. You had your festival of fanboy material consumption.

I didn't have the cash, I can't afford to lose my roll-over minutes in my business, I budget was far too tight to splurge on a toy that could be obsolete in months, I have to save money and wait till my RAZR bites the dust even though after playing with the iPhone in store I can see how it would be helpful in my business to have a phone running far better software than the crappy contact stuff Motorola sticks on their phone.

I think this is fantastic news by Apple for majority that can't afford to make impulse buys of premium priced new products. All of you would have been totally happy if they kept the sames prices you had paid for the next six months and given not a thought to those with tighter budgets who have to wait.

Bravo Apple!!!!!

Whatever. If you purchased the iPhone for $600, you'd feel kinda pissed off. Even more if you just bought it 15 days ago (I bought mines 20 days ago). Don't deny it, and there's no reason to come in here to bash others who are pissed off.

You didn't, so you're not. And you're an *******. Bravo Apple?

Apple Pricing Policy

Hey everybody - I'm not sure if this has been posted yet, but the policy from Apple legal on Apple Store Pricing states,

"Should Apple reduce its price on any Apple-branded product within fourteen (14) calendar days of the date of purchase, you may request a refund of the difference between the price paid and the current selling price. An original purchase receipt is required, and you must request your refund within fourteen (14) calendar days of the price reduction."

So, I guess this would apply here, right? For anyone who purchased an iPhone within the last 2 weeks.

Here's the direct link for apple's legal information: http://www.apple.com/legal/sales_policies/retail_us.html

I can't believe people want to file a lawsuit against Apple for a price decrease. Are you kidding me?

To the whiners: You are the ones who decided to be early adopters in the mobile phone market which moves even faster than the computer market. You are the one who agreed to pay $600 for the iPhone because obviously you felt it was worth that price. Instead of taking responsibility for your actions and choices, you want to sue someone else. That's pretty weak in my opinion.

Well, that's the thing. It's not about what's right or what you've seen in the past, it's about what Apple thought they could get away with while maximizing their profit and alienating the fewest number of people.

While the fallout is a lot of pissed off fanboys, these are also, historically, their strongest and most loyal customers... that is, those customers least likely to completely walk away and stop buying Apple products.

They decided that the fallout cutting the price was acceptably bad, and that they wouldn't lose too many loyal customers and likely gain many more as a result -- all while earning a pretty healthy margin these past couple months. It's just shrewd business, it has nothing to with how customers feel, only about what they buy or will buy in the future.

JUST ORDERED MY 4GB iPHONE IN THE CLEARANCE STORE!!!!!!

WOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Apple!!!

Can't wait to see what the cellphone industry % point is next month! iPhone will probably be up to 5% with the vast majority being 4GB model owners.

It would be nice if apple drops a itunes card in our stocking but having said that....

It's called life kid. Get to know it.

Don't let the Powers That Be hear you had $600 left to blow on a phone--they'll raise tuition rates again.

Hey dude, no reason to insult a fellow poster who is trying to introduce some calm and reason into this bitchfest.

i hear ya man but there's a lot of insulting going on these days anyway....as many care to point out, i was one of those dumb early adopters after all.

all i want is some damn nice update to ease my pain....is that too much to ask?! I'm sure i'll get it 2 months from now, but I don't think it's right for a friggin ipod to have flash capabilities while my $600, umm, sorry, $400 dollar iphone does not.

Can versus Should

It comes down to this:

Can Apple do this?
YES

Should they do this?
YES

Did they realize that this move would alienate their diehard fans and early adopters?

PS: someone is finally picking up on the negative side of the press announcement today

http://money.cnn.com/news/newsfeeds/articles/djf500/200709051654DOWJONESDJONLINE000989_FORTUNE5.htm

I don't see a negative side in this article. All I see is someone just talking out his butt. I mean, maybe Apple didn't sell as many as they wanted and maybe they did. Maybe then just want to sell even more and this was planned since January. He has no idea. The new 4 gig nano is only 149. Does that mean the previous 4 gig nano wasn't selling well at 199? I know it's not the same but who knows why Apple decided to drop the price.
