If you bought it when it was advertised at that price then they have to sell it to you at that price.

No, unfortunately they don't. There's lots of small print in the T&Cs as to when your offer to buy is accepted - and it's not when you click the checkout button.

They're very careful to state that they have received your order but they haven't yet taken any money or accepted the order so it's not a binding contract. All direct retailers have similar t&cs to protect themselves from screw-ups, malicious errors, stock not being available as expected etc.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Mum's though since as they've shipped part of the order and billed for that which is dependent on the iPod sale for its price, you've got to think that they've accepted the other part of the order too.

Just bought an 8gig one in Sydney - not cheap but the coolest iPod yet. I bought it for my wife, but I think I'll keep it and give her my black 60 gig 5G. It'sworth the full price you cheapskates.!!!!

I remember when Amazon accidentally put the wrong price on some sort of PDA type of thing a few years back, people from work were literally buying them by the dozen. Of course all of the orders were cancelled.

Edit: Linky

Hmm, just logged into Mum's Amazon account and her iPod has disappeared too - although the other part of the order has still shipped and with the iPod promotion discount still applied.

So she's got the iGroove (currently on sale for £175) for £157... but no iPod to play in it.

Agreed about the disappearing orders — I've got no problem if they cancel it because I know it's not a contract until it's shipped, but I would have expected an email and/or for it to be still on my order history but to say cancelled next to it. Some people presumably could have ordered it legitimately (and perhaps not be the kind of people that check the order history every 2 minutes ) and now it's disappeared. I ****ing hate Amazon, out of the last 8 orders between me and my bloke, they've buggered each one of them up in some way.

I once had a rant on Radio 5 about Amazon's crap service...

And I'd class Mum as someone who will astonished if her speakers come without iPod and they don't let her know since she'll be listening to the sound of silence without it.

Besides I'll be telling her to argue the fact that they did accept her iPod order since they shipped the speakers with the discount which is dependent on the iPod being in her order.
I've sent a little message to the Register to see if they can get any kind of official statement on it...

Nice one! Will be interested to see where this goes. I'll say again that I have no issues with them cancelling due to their mistake as that's the T&C you sign up to, but they aren't exactly handling it very well afterwards.

I'm actually thinking of cancelling my account. Ever since last May, I've been sick of their bad service, and I'm using them less and less anyway. I've been using my local graphics bookshop for books and Fopp for CDs, and Play.com is often cheaper and much faster than Amazon anyway. I may cancel as a matter of principle. :)

Just got an email cancelling my order! But they did give me £20 voucher, great!

Yup me too! Scrubs series 4 for £4 or a new Shuffle for £35.... hmmmmm...
This worked out quite nicely! :D

Why don't I have one? :(

It's interesting though — I wonder how much of a loss selling the Nanos at £114 would have been, as £20 is not to be sniffed at. Obviously they would have (in theory) lost £50 or so, as opposed to £20, but you'd think it would just have been simpler to let the orders go through.

Hmm, £24 for Scrubs Season 4 without the voucher eh?

Man, you guys are getting ripped off, it's A$37 here (~£15)

The cost price of the 8GB Nano is about £10 more than they were selling it for plus they'll have the cost of shipping - so they've have ended up with a negative margin on, presumably, several hundred (or possibly thousand) Nanos. Not to mention that it would probably use up their stock allocations for the next few weeks. They can sell them at full price anyhow and any genuine customers will likely be happy to be able to buy with £20 off - which still allows them to make some cash on the transaction (or on any other transaction that the customer makes since most items have a higher margin than iPods).

Sorry Lau - I got mine this afternoon.
I had a play with one on the Apple Store the other day and it's damn fine.
Haven't opened this one yet - it's sitting there looking at me.
Sorry to all those who had them cancelled.
My girlfriend keeps telling me not to spend too much time on cheap shopping websites but I can't resist.
I'm from Yorkshire - what can I do? :D

Most interesting, thanks for explaining it. It's interesting the ins and outs of it all.

Nickygoat — how come yours went through, dammit?! :p I'll look out for that Marketplace thread then. ;)

MoneySavingExpert.com? I've saved so much money, er, spending money via that site!

I thought I saw moths fluttering out of your wallet when we met that time! It's normal, I'm from up North too ;)

Congrats on the bargain though. Hopefully everyone else will get £20 vouchers for their trouble. I have to say that I've always had great service from Amazon. It's ParcelNet (that Amazon now use for the freebie delivery) I've had trouble with. For example, they put my girlfriend's birthday presents in my wheelie bin and posted a card to tell me. Of course the bin men got there first and she had no presents on the day!!

 and that's it being uber cheap over here *shakes fist in direction of the Chancellor of the Exchequer*

Ordered a £35 Gen2 Shuffle with the voucher... and ordered Scrubs anyway...
And both series of Green Wing...
And series 5 of Family Guy...
And Weekend At Bernies...
And... ah hell, you can tell where this goes. I spent too much money.
Again. :D

Well, a week after sending an an email to Amazon saying that if they were going to cancel my order they could at least have sent me an email, I got an email back saying some bollocks about how the order was cancelled because they hadn't received a valid method of payment (obviously a valid credit card with over a grand's worth of credit on it isn't "valid"). Even if that was the case (which it wasn't — that's just total crap), how that justifies them not notifying me of the cancelled order, I don't know. And they never sent me a £20 voucher.

Am pretty pissed off with them, as they've made a right pigs ear of about the last 5 or 6 orders I've made in one way or another.

Sorry to hear that Lau - that really is crappy service.
I'd send them an email pointing out how bad the service has been on all those occasions. Can't do any harm.
At least you got a nano in the end ;)
And those links I sent you tend not to go through Amazon so you might get lucky.

That's the one. I seem to be in the same boat "saving" so much money ;)

You're lucky you even saw it - normally my arms don't reach the bottom of my pockets :D

Cheers, Nickygoat. I think I'm going to email Amazon and tell them that I'm cancelling my account and won't be buying anything from them this Christmas cause I'm sick of them (which is true). I'm sure they won't care, but it'll make me feel better. :p And thanks again for the links, I've been keeping an eye on em this week for more spending, I mean, saving tips. ;)

Mum got no response to her email either about having accepted her order by charging her accessory as if she'd got the iPod so she's decided to pick up her iPod at duty-free on Sunday rather than buy it from Amazon and use her £20 for something else. Still, she got her speakers £30 cheaper too so not all bad...

Well you say that they won't care but any service company worth it's salt should care - most people won't tolerate rubbish service.
And most people won't complain so companies will never change.
Glad you liked the links :)
