It came to my attention that there in fact IS 4GB sticks of DDR2 memory around.

I have a Early 2008 Penryn 17" Macbook Pro. I'm currently Running Snow Leopard at the moment. I did some searching on the forums and couldn't find a definitive answer.

Is it possible to install 8GB of ram on my MBP? Or is it too old? I was curious if this might help encoding performance in Final Cut Pro at all or anything else.

According to the info I have (through MacTracker), the maximum you can use is 6GB. Otherworldcomputing seems to agree, through their own testing (they have 4GB modules for $139.99).

edit: (the Newegg link is to a deactivated product)

Would I even see a noticeable performance boost from 4GB to 6GB thats worth it?

Is there any chance in hell that Apple will release new firmware updates to allow up to 8GB to be addressed on earlier 2008 non unibody MBP's?

It depends on your usage. Check in Activity Monitor, under System Memory, for page-outs. If you have a relatively large amount, you might benefit from more physical RAM.

What's the deal with the Rev G mid 2009 MBP? Presumably it can take 6 or 8GB?
ANd what do people do with the 2 sticks of memory in there that they replace?
