Hi all, just got an M1 Max 16", and I am testing out the HDR at 8K. I use Chrome and Safari, I seem to remember Chrome is usually the choice...but as I go around the threads looking at the 8K videos people have posted, a few give me the option in YouTube for 8K, but most don't. I have the Mac set up as ProMotion, is there a codec or something I am missing? I remember on my 2019 MacBook Pro I saw 8K when the video supported that, even though it stuttered etc.

Thanks for your help!

It's prob disabled. If you use AV1 it does support 8K decoding using software decoder.

Also. For HDR it's kinda a mess right now since there's a bug that it sometimes kernel panic when playing HDR videos from YouTube.

We think that's why YouTube disabled HDR for Macs for now

If it's disabled, can I enable it? How do I know if I have AV1, I am not familiar with that codec? Thanks for your help!

Right click on the player on YouTube. Click stats for nerds. You could see if it's using vp9 or AV1

As for enabling AV1 it's usually enabled on chrome . Especially for 8k. But HDR is disabled on YouTube for now so yeh.
