Bloomberg reports that Wal-Mart is expecting to begin offering the iPad for sale in its stores sometime "later this year", building on the company's existing offerings of the iPhone 3GS and various iPod models.
"We anticipate being able to have the iPad later this year," Gary Severson, senior vice president of entertainment for Wal-Mart's U.S. stores, said in a telephone interview. The Bentonville, Arkansas-based company isn't prepared to provide specifics on the timing and pricing of the iPad, he said.
Apple declined to comment specifically on the report, noting only that it has not made any announcements on new iPad retail partners since the device was introduced. U.S. distribution is currently limited to Apple's online and retail stores and Best Buy locations offering the Apple "store-within-a-store" concept.

Apple has been struggling to keep up with customer demand for the iPad in the United States, even as the company this week began taking pre-orders in nine new countries for delivery later this month. Customers looking to order the iPad in those new countries have already seen Apple burn through its launch quantities, with shipping estimates for new orders being pushed out beyond the May 28th launch date.

Uh oh, here come all the highbrow macusers bashing Walmart.

Good for Apple and good for Walmart.

Exactly. Whats the big deal if the iPad is sold in Wal-Mart!? Its a plus for both companies. If you have Apple stock you should be happy!

I love how Wal-Mart = Redneck to some people... unbelievable..

1+

Can't wait until all the whinners start crying because the iPad will lose its "exclusivity". The thing is Wal-Mart is great because it provides thousands of Americans with jobs and is one of the biggest providers of reasonably-priced goods for the less fortunate.

you could always go in wearing a disguise

meh... I am an only an elitist SOB up to a certain point.:D Been thinking.... If WMT Can sell me an ipad for say $20 or more off retail I could be swayed into using that $100 WMT gift card thats been sitting in my glove compartment for the past year. I could also redeem points on my credit cards to get another $200 worth of WMT gift cards. Maybe I can get an ipad for mom or start collecting points so I can get a free ipad by the time the next revision is introduced.

I'm proud of the fact that I've never shopped at Walmart even once in my entire life. :)

Wow, Apple is REALLY getting mainstream... time to find another eclectic off-the-map company to follow...

LOL. Reminds me of "my favorite band sold out and is actually making enough money to feed their families now, so I can't be a fan anymore!!!!!" people I used to go to school with.

My problem with walmart stems from the way they practice buisness and they upset the local economic eco systems too. I Personally prefer target over walmart.

But.. but... if the "common people" can have access to iPads, how on earth will I be able to keep using it as an elite status symbol? It's like, now I'm no better than any other guy. Sigh.

While I hate Wal-Mart, I view this as good thing for my job.

The more iPads and similar devices there are on the internet promoting W3C standards, the better off the web will be. Right now there is W3C standards and then there are MS standards. Regardless of the iPad specifically, the more people that use devices dedicated open standards, the easier my job is and the more accessible the web becomes and more obsolete IE and bad websites written in Flash become. I am not against flash content, but flash should never be used to make a website just people should never write a website that works exclusively in IE.

The whole rednecks and Walmart thing is getting really old. My family shops at Walmart, not because we're rednecks (which we aren't), but because we can actually save money by shopping at Walmart. Walmart bashers, please just admit that you take issue with the fact that Walmart doesn't pay union wages, so we can end this myth.

Ever since a Walmart came to my area, a good portion of the people in our town have begun to shop there. And no, they aren't rednecks, unless doctors, partners at large law firms, and university professors are rednecks.

I have no problem with Walmart selling the iPad, I will still buy from Best Buy in order to rack up more reward points though.

I can save more by not shopping at Wal-Mart. It's bizarre.
