What could possibly be taking up that much space? I just bought this macbook less than a month ago. Could it just be displaying false information?

Could be trash files, diagnostic info, and the like. I would run something like DaisyDisk (there's a free version on their website, or a more feature rich version on the App Store) and see what it turns up.

Thanks for the reply and suggestion, that's a very helpful app. Turns out it was just my steam files. Didn't realize how big they were / they weren't stored in the application folder.
