I've reserved a phone at an Apple store for June 24 pickup. For those who didn't, Apple sends you an email containing the following:

Be sure to bring these items with you:
• A valid, government-issued photo ID
• Your Social Security number
• A debit or credit card

Long story short, I have been the sole user of my ATT account since its inception in '06. However, the name on the account and social security number on it are in a family member's name. Will Apple care? (no pun intended)

no aslong as AT&T have you as an authorized buyer on your family member account. all you have to show is your ID and know the last 4 digits of the SN on the account.

For previous launches, you had to be the account holder (being authorized didn't matter).

Some have said this policy has changed in the last couple months, so we will see.

Question:
How can I add a Retail Authorized User to my account?
How do I give permission to another person to make changes to my account?
Can a family member be authorized to go to an AT&T retail store and make changes to my account?
What identification does a Retail Authorized User need in order to make changes to an account?
Answer:
A primary account holder can allow another person to visit a retail location and make certain changes to their account by designating that person as a Retail Authorized User. This measure protects the privacy and security of the primary account holder while allowing account flexibility for a family or group.

To designate someone as a Retail Authorized User:

1. Log in to your MyWireless Account.
2. Select My Profile from the manage navigation bar at the top of the page.
3. Select Add New User under the Authorized Users, Retail Store section at the bottom of the page.
4. Fill out the required information and select Save Changes.
5. Select Save Changes when you are returned to the Account Information page.

Note: When visiting a retail location, the Retail Authorized User must provide a current government-issued photo ID. No more than two Retail Authorized Users can be added to an account.

Retail Authorized Users and Apple Stores - If visiting an Apple store, the primary account holder must be present.

This is directly from AT&T's website, and according to it you need to be the primary account holder if buying at an Apple Store, even if you authorize someone else.

I just called the local store I'll be picking up at, and the person that answered the phone double checked with the manager and said that as long as I was an authorized user on the account (I am, just checked ATT's site) and that I simply know the social security number on the account, everything will be fine.

I will be calling ATT to try and change the entire account to my name/SSN before the 24th, though. Who wants to bet doing so will screw everything up? :D
