Hardmac reports that it has heard that Apple is considering rebranding Mac OS X under the new "iOS" name recently rolled out as a replacement for "iPhone OS". The change would serve as a means for uniting Apple's operating systems under a single naming scheme with multiple flavors.
They are currently thinking of using iOS as the default naming/branding of Apple OS. We would then have iOS desktop, iOS server and iOS mobile. The final decision is not taken yet, however, the proposal seems to be well supported by the high management, it would give a better exposure and unity to Apple OS platforms while making communication easier.
Such a change could facilitate branding and marketing if Apple were to release touchscreen-enabled Macs running an "iOS mobile" layer on top of the traditional Mac OS X.

While the "i" naming scheme has become synonymous with Apple's mobile devices, it obviously has its origins in the iMac, introduced in 1998 and carried along through multiple iterations to today's desktop computer still bearing the same name. A tighter marketing integration of Apple's traditional Mac operating system and mobile operating system could help Apple position itself for a future where lines between computing environments continue to blur.

Oh noooooooooooooooo

As anticipated - there goes the Macintosh and it's valued operating system. Pros not updated, no real innovation in the Mac branded computers, MBA not renewed...

Another indication to say good bye to the Macintosh Computer line. Apple is really focusing these days only on the consumer portable device. Sad day indeed...:(

I think it's about time they unified the branding for their various OSes, it makes sense

It begins.

This might be the realization of my greatest fear...that Apple's mobile OS will be translated to a desktop version.

The day that happens, sayonara Apple. I need a full-featured OS. Not some version of a mobile operating system.

Of course this might JUST be a naming convention, in which case, no big deal. But if they're thinking about unifying all features...ouch.

I'm not a fan of the "iOS" moniker, but I recognize that they can't keep using "OS X" forever. That started 10 years ago! "OS XI" doesn't have quite the same ring to it either.

OMGZZ!!!1!!one1!!!!1

in 3...2...1...

But I really don't mind as long as they still keep them in their own classes. i.e mobile, desktop, etc.

Nah. Even if the next iteration of MacOS has an iOS compatibility layer, I can't see it adopting the name. The move from iPhone OS to iOS was smart. Calling two radically different things "iOS" would be terribly confusing.

"iOS Mobile", "iOS Desktop", etc. reeks of Microsoft's naming conventions.

Please no >_<

OS X is arguably the last decent thing left with this company... and this would mean beginning of the end of it too :(

In my opinion, this is one step closer to Apple killing OS X. Or... a rebrand could be the start of a new generation of Apple desktop/server operating systems.

There's no way OS X is just going to die. Even if they rename it, which is a horrible idea imo, it's still going to be a desktop OS. I just hate the way iOS rolls off the tongue, and whenever most people hear "i" before something, they think mobile like iPhone not iMac. In the end, who knows what it will do to exposure, but I don't think Apple is leaving the desktop computing industry.

Inevitable

Of course they will. Imagine how much funds they are pumping into mobile technology compared to desktop technology.

Apple is deciding our future, and our future is an under-featured, air-tight OS with flashy animations and little room to grow without Apple's help.

All for it

I support renaming OS X to iOS when Mac Computers can be touch sensitive. At the moment it will make customers confused:

iPhone iOS 4
Mac iOS 10.7

Makes mac look much more advanced than 4, yet it's still not touch. Little weird.
