2.4 ghz i5 vs. 2.53 ghz i5

With the educational discount the 2.53 ghz i5 is only $60 more than the baseline 2.4 ghz i5. Isn't it good sense to just get the 2.53 i5, or is the 130 Mhz really that pointless and/or negligible?

I will probably be installing an SSD myself later this year anyway, so I should have a fast computer.

What do you guys think? Should I get a 2.4 ghz i5 or 2.53 ghz i5.

By the way I won't be using this computer for intense photo editing or something. I'm in college so I'll be programming, writing papers, watching HD movies, playing games occasionally, and having bootcamp.

I want a good laptop to last me through college.

133 MHz makes very little difference. Get the 2.4GHz machine. If you have the $$ to blow, go ahead with the 2.53GHz model.

Now, a SSD or more RAM would make much more of a difference than 133MHz.
 
The extra 130 MHz really is negligible, although for $60, why not. Plus you get the 500GB HDD with that as well. Overall, not too much different, but if you have the few extra bucks, and want the extra 180 gigs of HDD for use later as an external or whatever, go ahead. Or you could get the lower end, and buy a nice mouse with the $60.
 
The OP's math is a bit off. It's not $60 for the upgrade from the 2.4 to the 2.53, that's only when you upgrade the hard drive on the 2.4 to match the 2.53. If you were going to upgrade the hard drive anyway to 500GB then yes, it's $60 but my recommendation is to keep your $60, it could be better spent on accessories. The 2.4 is still the best deal. Today's CPU hungry applications won't see any benefit of the extra 130Mhz.

Do the MacBooks not throttle the Core i5's like they should?

If so the 2.53 should throttle up to 3.06 GHz and the 2.4 would max at 2.93
 
Maybe I wasn't clear on the other thread:

2.4Ghz Model = $1699
500GB HD (@ newegg for example) = $60

$1699 + $60 = $1759

2.53Ghz Model = $1849

Difference = $1849 - $1759 = $90

And if you upgrade the hard drive yourself with the 2.4Ghz model you have a spare 320GB also and $90 left over.

Almost everyone agreed in the last thread that the 2.4Ghz -> 2.53Ghz upgrade is a waste of money, even at $60, although it is actually a $90 upgrade if you consider the hard drive can be upgraded for less if done yourself.
 
Yeah I think I would personally go for the 2.4! If you upgrade the hard drive yourself the 320gb in an external caddy would definitely be useful for something like time machine!

Although if you have money to burn and would like to pay for new turtlenecks for Steve Jobs, I don't think anyone around these parts would object.
