$99 Iphone as a cheaper Ipod touch?

Can you buy an Iphone and not activate it? I don't want a cell phone but the idea of just using it as an Ipod for $99 is appealing.

You can buy it for $99 and never activate it, but it will just be a paperweight. The reason you can get one for $99 is that AT&T is footing the rest of the bill because you're agreeing to a 2-year service contract with them.

Once the current 3G owners have been in their contract for 16 months, couldn't they get either another 3G for $99 or a 3GS for $199 and then resell it/use it as an iTouch?

Yes, the old 2G or 3G phone can be used as a touch without any contract at that point.

If you dont activate it during the first month they will bill you the cost of the iphone real price

But after 16 months can't you upgrade to the iphone 3GS for $199, then just sell it and use your old 3G?
