Apple get much more for the same product by simply selling it in another country. This sort of thing should be illegal.

$999 plus sales tax guys don't forget that so lets say an average of 10% which means $1098 converted into sterling is rounded up £830 so a nice £169 profit for every phone sold in the UK.
 
£999 minus UK VAT @ 20% = £832.50.

£832.50 * 1.31821 (current interbank exchange rate) = $1,097.41.
 
Let's compare US prices to UK before taxes.

So, $999 is £751 (at a 1.33 middle exchange rate)

£751 + 20% VAT is £901.

Still a large-ish profit for Apple in the UK, but not as big as it seems.

You can blame the British government for upping the VAT rate in 2011 for some of the UK price (about £20 difference between the two VAT rates).
