I have a two week old penryn 2.4 mbp 15" matte, with the 9c81 panel, and I am really not happy with the colours. The screen looked really washed out with the original profile, and since I haven't had access to the spyder I used for calibrating my old laptop (dell, horrible computer but good sxga+ screen), I created a few profiles using the eyeballing profiler in system preferences. I also tried a few profiles I found lnks to on these forums.

No matter which profile I use, many gradients look terrible, and especially skin tones and the darker quarter of the greyscale has weird posterization and splotches. Admittedly, this may be helped when I get it calibrated with the spyder, but the problems seem a bit too general for me to feel sure of that.

Are the 15" matte penryns delivered with any other panels than the 9c81, and are there differences in the dithering algorithms between the panels, or in how they display them? I have done enough research to realise that all laptop displays are now 18 bit devices, but I would still hope to be able to trust my mbp display somewhat for photo editing.

That profile is a bit too contrasty for my 9C81 panel. The grays become blacks. I can see why people are raving over it, it gives a "pop" to the image, but I prefer detail ;)

I use an almost-identical profile using the built in calibration tool.. same exact color warmth, just less contrast.

As for gradient issues, no, I haven't seen anything like that except on one unedited photograph where portions of the night sky look funky and discolored - I think it's the photo's fault though, as other images with similar dark areas don't have problems.

    Thanks!!!!!!!

    THANKS!!! PERFECT!!!!
I just received my 15" 2.4 MBP with matt screen, model 9C81 and what a difference...from washed out with tint of yellow to deep true colors. You would think it would ship that way.
